Deadline has officially confirmed that the cartoon character Stewie Griffin, the youngest member of the Griffin family in the hit Fox comedy animation Family Guy by Seth MacFarlane, will receive his own spin-off series.
It has been confirmed that the spin-off, officially titled simply Stewie, will receive a Fox premiere sometime between 2027 and 2028. It will then be available for streaming on both Hulu and Disney+ alongside the original show.
“I’d like to thank Fox for this incredible opportunity”, comedy-creator MacFarlane has reportedly stated. “And I’m excited to start pretending I’m collaborating closely with them on the show.”
Kirker Butler shares co-creator and co-executive-producer alongside MacFarlane, and added: “I am honoured and humbled that Seth, 20th Television Animation, and Fox have trusted me with one of the most iconic animated characters in the history of television.”
“I have known Seth for more than two decades, worked with him on half a dozen projects… And I am hopeful this is the one where he finally learns my name,”, Butler added.
Stewie will be the second Family Guy spin-off following The Cleveland Show, which aired from September 2009 to May 2013 and focused on the Griffin family’s neighbour, Cleveland Brown. As a reflection of the original show’s serialised manner, where every episode is a clean slate and has its own reality and consecutiveness, Stewie will have no canon influence on Stewie’s place in its parent show.
Family Guy debuted on the 31st January, 1999: the first season was watched by a reported 13.12 million viewers, and the show also overcame a cancellation after its third season in 2002 to become a cultural phenomenon despite its divisive reception. MacFarlane is also the creator and a leading voice cast member of American Dad!, another animated family-based sitcom which debuted in 2005, and the Ted franchise.
