A new research series by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), supported by EF Adventures and CBI, examines how adventure travel continues to evolve beyond its traditional niche in four major outbound regions: North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
Together, these travellers represent a global adventure-oriented outbound market valued at approximately $1.16 trillion, highlighting the growing influence of experience-driven travel worldwide.
According to the ATTA, adventure travel is defined as any experience that combines the following elements: immersion in nature, physical activity, and a cultural exchange.
A majority of international travelers are now considered “Open to Adventure,” meaning they are willing to incorporate active, cultural, or nature-based experiences into their trips even when what is commonly thought of as adventure is not the primary motivation.
Heather Kelly, Director of Research and Knowledge at ATTA, said that: “At its core, adventure travel today is about exploration and connection.”
And Kelly continued: “What we’re seeing across all four regions is a large audience of travellers who want meaningful engagement with places, cultures, and landscapes. Adventure is becoming less about a single activity and more about how people experience a destination.”
The research series examines how this ‘Open to Adventure’ mindset plays out across the four regions and identifies shared trends and key differences in traveler motivations, spending patterns, and preferred experiences.
Full reports will be published by region over the course of the next three weeks.
Asia: The Largest Adventure Opportunity
Among the four regions analyzed, Asia represents the largest adventure-oriented outbound market, with an estimated $424 billion in travel spending among travellers who are ‘Open to Adventure.’ The region’s rapid growth in outbound travel, driven by expanding middle classes and improved connectivity, has created a powerful new engine for global tourism.
Europe: A Mature Adventure Market
Europe represents another major source of adventure-oriented travelers, with a large and well-established outbound tourism market. European adventure travellers, worth an estimated $357 billion, often display strong environmental awareness and a high level of familiarity with experiences such as hiking, cycling, and nature-based travel. As a result, sustainability considerations and outdoor recreation play a particularly prominent role in travel decision-making among European audiences.
North America: Experience-Driven Travel
In North America, adventure travel has become deeply embedded in how many travellers approach international trips, leading to an estimated value of $188 billion. Travellers from the United States and Canada show strong interest in experiences that combine physical activity with cultural discovery such as guided hiking, wildlife viewing, culinary exploration, and immersive local experiences.
Latin America: A Fast-Growing Adventure Market
Latin America’s outbound adventure market represents approximately $39 billion in spending among travellers open to adventure, with nearly half of the region’s international travellers falling into this category. Markets such as Mexico and Brazil, the region’s largest outbound travel sources, demonstrate a particularly strong desire for experiences that combine exploration with social and family-oriented travel.
A New Era for Adventure Travel
For destinations and tourism businesses alike in all four regions, understanding the ‘Open to Adventure’ traveller will be essential in the years ahead.
ATTA President Gustavo Timo observed that: “Adventure travel today is less about extremes and more about connection. Travellers want to engage with the world in deeper ways, and destinations that help facilitate those connections are the ones most likely to thrive.”á
With more than a trillion dollars in global travel spending linked to adventure-oriented experiences, the opportunity for destinations that understand this evolving traveler has never been greater.
