South Africa Women delivered a clinical performance to secure a commanding 18-run victory over New Zealand Women in the 2nd T20I at Seddon Park. In a contest defined by shift-shaping momentum, the Proteas utilized a late-innings explosive cameo and a masterclass in pace bowling to level the series. After posting a formidable 177/5, the visitors successfully dismantled the White Ferns’ chase, bowling them out for 159 in 19.1 overs.

The match began with South Africa finding solid footing through Tazmin Brits, who anchored the early stages with a fluent 53 off 34 balls, supported by Sune Luus (31). However, a middle-order wobble saw the Proteas slip from 110/1 to 143/5. With the innings at risk of stalling, the momentum shifted dramatically in the final two overs.

Kayla Reyneke’s late blitz sets the tone for South Africa

While Laura Wolvaardt remained steady at one end with an unbeaten 41 off 33, it was the youthful exuberance of Kayla Reyneke that truly turned the tables. Coming in at number seven, Reyneke played a Player of the Match-winning cameo that left the New Zealand bowlers shell-shocked.

In a lightning-fast display of power hitting, Reyneke smashed 28 runs off just 9 deliveries. Her strike rate of 311.11 featured two towering sixes and three fours, effectively looting the death overs for maximum value. This late surge added nearly 30 runs to the projected total in a matter of minutes, propelling South Africa to a psychological advantage at the break. The sheer velocity of Reyneke’s scoring deflated the hosts’ spirits and provided the Proteas’ bowlers with a comfortable cushion to defend.

Ayabonga Khaka’s bowling masterclass rips through the White Ferns

Chasing 178, New Zealand’s response started with aggressive intent but lacked the necessary stability. Despite a rapid 32 from Amelia Kerr and a defiant 29 from Izzy Sharp, the White Ferns could never find their rhythm against a disciplined South African attack led by the veteran Ayabonga Khaka.

Khaka produced an exceptional spell of seam bowling, finishing with remarkable figures of 4/27 at an economy of 6.75. She struck her first blow by removing Isabella Gaze for 6, but her true impact was felt during the middle and death overs. Khaka’s ability to vary her pace and find consistent lengths saw her claim the crucial wickets of Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, and finally Sharp to break the back of the New Zealand resistance.

Supported by Nonkululeko Mlaba, who claimed 3/27, Khaka ensured that the required run rate climbed beyond reach. New Zealand’s collapse was systematic; they tumbled from 100/4 to 107/7 in the span of single over, a slide from which they never recovered. The victory was sealed in the final over when Rosemary Mair was run out, leaving the Proteas to celebrate a dominant all-around display on the Kiwi soil.
