After months of anticipation, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped on Wednesday. For many fans, it was particularly exciting, offering a promising look at Tom Holland’s titular hero as he seemingly undergoes some sort of mutation while sharing the screen with the likes of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Montreal-born Michael Mando’s Scorpion.
But something else from the trailer that has generated some chatter is Spidey’s phone. Yes, some eagle-eyed viewers have pointed out that Peter can be seen using what appears to be a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 as he solemnly watches videos of his former girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon).
Notably, the phone starts at $1,099 in the U.S., where Spidey lives (or $1,643 for us folks up in Canada), yet Pete is historically broke — especially, one would assume, in this post-No Way Home world where he’s completely alone. (As he reminds us in the trailer, everyone forgot who he was in that last film due to Dr. Strange’s magic.)

Amusingly, this led to a big Reddit thread in r/shittymoviedetails, a comedic subreddit in which people make deliberately wrong, silly or flat-out stupid posts about specific aspects of a film. The original poster, ESPRMusic, quipped that the reason Peter is poor is because he spent all of his money on an expensive Samsung phone.
Naturally, this led to a bunch of funny replies. One commenter named Flecca suggested a practical use case: “It folds in half so it fits in his ass better because he has no pockets.” In the spirit of “r/shittymoviedetails,” user mcgriff4hall joked that Spidey’s choice of a Samsung phone proves he’s going to be a villain, referring to comments from Knives Out director Rian Johnson that Apple doesn’t allow movie bad guys to use iPhones. QueenMagic, meanwhile, suggested “he got it from one of the poors he beats with his fists.”
It will be interesting to see what other phones might pop up in the film. Sony, the co-producer of Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside Marvel Studios, used to make a lot of Xperia phones. While it’s largely scaled back on those, reports indicate it may still be making another handset, so perhaps it will want to promote that with another character in Spidey’s latest cinematic adventure. And if not, there’s always PlayStation-owned developer Insomniac’s expected third Spider-Man game.
For now, though, we’ll just have to wait until Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theatres on July 31.
