Recently, a report from Bloomberg announced that Samsung will be discontinuing the Galaxy Z Trifold in the U.S. after it is fully sold out. The device was released late January of this year, and its production has already been halted. The Galaxy Z Trifold was extremely expensive, roughly C$3,979.75 and was made in small quantities globally. But according to a report by Naver, Samsung is testing out a possible successor, which is a next-gen tri-fold device with a target launch of 2027.
With this new successor possibly on the way, we could be looking at a next-gen tri-fold device with a lighter, thinner design and an improved hinge system. It is also expected that the new product will feature a design that is easier and cost-effective, due to the main issue with the Galaxy Z Trifold being that production costs were too high, making the phone unprofitable. There’s also a possibility that the new successor could be released alongside other potential foldables down the line, making it part of a foldable lineup in the future.
For those who currently own the Galaxy Z Trifold, this does not mean that Samsung is currently abandoning the device just yet, as it has just received a recent software update, meaning Samsung will continue to support it, at least for now.
Samsung may be pressured into this 2027 launch idea due to competitors like Huawei already launching their second-generation tri-folds. The tech brand is trying to be more cautious around the release of this new product due to the need for better durability, lower costs and real mass market demand.
There has also been talk of a potential slideable phone also slated for release in 2027. This would be Samsung’s first consumer-ready slideable phone. The design would feature a screen that can extend from inside the phone and will possibly measure up to 7 inches. Samsung previewed one prototype at MWC 2026 that slides vertically to reveal more of the screen, but did not confirm any plans for the device to the public.
