An Alabama woman has been arrested after authorities said she neglected her two teenage sons with autism, with one accidentally strangling himself to death with a blanket when the boys were left home alone.
Amanda Morgan was arrested on Tuesday, March 17, following an investigation into the death of her 14-year-old son, according to WALA.
On October 8, 2025, officers from the Mobile Police Department responded to Morgan’s home and found her 14-year-old son dead. As officers looked through the home, they allegedly observed signs of neglect.
Morgan, 39, was charged five months later with the murder of her son and aggravated child abuse.
The mother appeared in court on Wednesday, March 18, for a bond hearing, which featured witnesses testifying about the state of her home at the time her son was found dead.
WKRG reported that there was evidence that Morgan had left both her 14-year-old and 16-year-old home alone overnight before the younger son died. One witness testified that Morgan would leave the teenagers home by themselves for “extended periods of time.”
The autopsy report stated that the 14-year-old boy was found with a blanket wrapped around his neck, and his cause of death was listed as “accidental strangulation.”
One person testified that Morgan’s home was apparently kept in a poor living condition. In addition to not having air conditioning or running water, the home was also allegedly infested with insects and human waste.
At the time the 14-year-old son died, Morgan’s 16-year-old was hospitalized for malnutrition, according to WKRG. It is not currently clear where he is living following Morgan’s arrest.
During the bond hearing, Morgan was ordered not to have contact with her surviving child.
Morgan’s bond has been set at $40,000 for the aggravated abuse charge and $400,000 for the murder charge.

She is currently in custody at the Mobile County Metro Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, March 24.
It is not currently clear if Morgan has entered a plea or retained legal representation. The Mobile Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the case.
The district attorney’s office said that investigators wanted to wait for an autopsy and toxicology report to be completed before they filed the charges against Morgan, according to WKRG. Once the reports were done, the district attorney’s office said there was enough evidence to charge Morgan with both of the charges.
