Recently, we learned that Telus Digital suffered a security incident after hackers stole nearly a petabyte (1,000TB) of data. Now, we’re learning that the Sony streamer Crunchyroll was affected by this initial incident.
Reportedly, the hackers contacted Cyber Digest and informed them that they were able to gain access to Crunchyroll’s data via Telus, as the streamer is an outsourcing partner of Telus Digital. Crunchyroll has yet to publicly confirm the breach, but according to the information shared by Cyber Digest, the attackers stole 100GB of data, including IP addresses, email addresses, credit card details and customer analytics.

The attackers told Cyber Digest that Crunchyroll had detected the access within 24 hours. However, considering the amount of stolen data in such a short time, it seems like Cyber Digest planned the operation very well. The Cybernews research team explained how damaging this attack could be: “If the breach is confirmed to be legitimate, the data exposure increases the risks of financial fraud, identity theft, and social engineering attacks for the affected individuals.”
On March 12, the hackers ‘ShinyHunter’ told BleepingComputer that they claimed to have stolen customer data related to Telus Digital operations, as well as call records from the Telus consumer division.
Additionally, ShinyHunters told BleepingComputer that it has stolen close to one petabyte of data belonging to the company and many of its customers, even from clients who outsource customer care to Telus Digital. The hackers told BleepingComputer of 28 well-known companies that were impacted by the breach, and it appears that Sony’s Crunchyroll was one of them.
