Kyriana Kratter (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) and Michelle Mao (Bridgerton) have been cast in two key roles for the upcoming third season of HBO’s post-apocalyptic video game adaptation of The Last of Us.
Deadline reports Kratter will take on the role of Lev, a former member of the Seraphites who serves as Abby Anderson’s partner and moral compass in Naughty Dog’s video game. Mao will play Yara, Lev’s older sister. Like in the game, Deadline notes “Lev is a 13-year-old transgender boy,” and HBO held an inclusive casting call to fill the role.
Most recently, Kyriana Kratter starred in Disney+’s Star Wars: Skeleton Crew opposite Jude Law and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She also had a recurring role in the Disney Channel show Bunk’d. As for Michelle Mao, she just had a major role in the fourth season of Netflix’s Bridgerton, playing Sophie’s evil stepsister Rosamund. She also headlined director Kogonada’s sci-fi feature Zi, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Kaitlyn Dever is set to return for the third season of The Last of Us. She portrays Abby, who is believed to be the focus of the upcoming season. Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) will also return as Ellie, along with Isabela Merced (Superman), Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate), and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).
Other newly announced additions to the cast include Clea DuVall (Argo), who will portray a Seraphite, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Bumblebee), who will take over playing Manny following Danny Ramirez’s departure. Jason Ritter (Matlock) and Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring) will also appear in the third season.
Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) will also be the sole showrunner of the third season, after video game co-creator Neil Druckmann stepped down as co-showrunner last year.
It is widely believed that the third season of The Last of Us will be the final chapter. It is expected to premiere on HBO in 2027.
