The Playlist has confirmed casting news for the robot-based sci-fi epic Gundam by director Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth), based on the anime series titled Mobile Suit Gundam. Michael Mando, having stepped off the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the Scorpion, will appear alongside The Housemaid Secret’s Sydney Sweeney, Netflix heartthrob Noah Centineo and A Quiet Place Part III‘s Jason Clarke in Mickle’s sci-fi feature, which is scheduled for a Netflix release.
The original Gundam anime was produced by Nippon Sunrise, created by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino. It centres on the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation as the two engage in a mighty battle, leading to a teenage Amuro Ray working the recently unveiled RX-78-2 Gundam robot.
Mobile Suit Gundam debuted in the spring of 1979 and ran for 43 episodes, beating immediate low ratings and a cancellation after it found a fanbase through model kits of the robot. A feature spin-off film followed on 22nd February, 1981 (“the day anime changed”), grossing ¥2.31 billion ($14,547,469.79) and was followed by two sequels in 1981 and 1982.
Additionally, three manga re-tellings based on the original series were released.
Mickle has reportedly replaced Kong: Skull Island’s director Jordan Vogt-Roberts to work on the project, and Legendary are the company working behind the scenes, springboarding off their experience and success with Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune: Part III. The Playlist also comments, “that Netflix may see this new ‘Gundam‘ film as a possible franchise starter, given the property’s global awareness and fanbase; audiences will likely be the final word on that front.”
