Disney have settled on a new project for their catalogue: a Cinderella spin-off based on the ugly stepsisters, titled Stepsisters, it has been reported.
It has been confirmed that Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers’s Akiva Schaffer, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand will reunite on the live-action feature centred on the fairytale villains Anastasia and Drizella. Schaffer will direct from a script penned by Gregor and Mand, with Tangled writer Michael Montemayor. Additionally, Jessica Virtue and Cady Stark will team up as creative executives.
The stepsisters originally appeared in the Disney universe all the way back in 1950 in the musical fantasy film by directing trio Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi. Based on the 1697 fairy tale by French author Charles Perrault, Cinderella ” tells the tale of a poorly treated young girl who is forced to work as a servant for her evil stepmother and stepsisters, voiced by Rhoda Williams and Lucille Bliss. However, all her wishes come true with the news that Prince Charming is throwing a ball to find his princess bride, with her fairy godmother and some glass slippers helping along the way.
Cinderella was followed by two sequels in 2002 and 2007 (Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time), with the third focusing on the stepsister Anastasia, twisting the events of the first film to prevent Cinderella from getting to the ball and meeting the prince she would later marry.
The third film helped to expand Anastasia into a more sympathetic villain, a trope Disney would go on to follow as gospel in their live-action remakes. Cinderella itself was remade into a live-action feature in 2015 with Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger playing the stepsisters, going on to kickstart Disney’s bug for adapting their animations for this presentation throughout the late 2010s and onwards.
