Dreamworks Animation has released the trailer for Forgotten Island, the coming-of-age fantasy adventure by writing and directing duo Joel Crawford (The Croods: A New Age and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) and Januel Mercado, starring the voice work of H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, and Manny Jacinto. Additional cast members include Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng, and Lea Salonga.
Crawford and Mercado work alongside producer Mark Swift for the project, and the two previously collaborated on Kung Fu Panda 2. They have confirmed that they based the film, with an animation style purposely following that of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, around their own friendship.
“I so quickly found a kindred spirit in my stupid humour, in my movie references — and, more than anything, a great friend who made me feel like I could be myself around him,” Crawford told The Hollywood Reporter when talking about Mercado. “When given the opportunity to tell a story of original story, I was like, ‘Friendship — it’s got to be about that.’”
Star H.E.R also told the outlet: “I get to share a piece of my childhood in this work and with the world. That’s super rewarding to me.”
The synopsis reads: “In the 1990s, in the Philippines, childhood friends Jo and Raissa promise to remain close forever. As they graduate from high school, Raissa prepares to move to the United States at the urging of her parents. Fearing the loss of their bond, Jo tries to persuade her to stay. However, the two are suddenly transported through a portal to the fantastical world of the forgotten island of Nakali, where memories gradually fade the longer one remains.”
Forgotten Island will be released on September 26th.
