Italy booked their place in the World Cup play-off final with a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in Bergamo.
The hosts endured a frustrating opening 45 minutes, struggling to break down a disciplined Northern Ireland side.
Despite dominating possession, clear-cut chances were limited, with Moise Kean and Mateo Retegui largely feeding off scraps.
The best opportunities came from distance or set-pieces, with Federico Dimarco testing goalkeeper Pierce Charles and Sandro Tonali going close with a header.
The pattern shifted after the break. Italy emerged with greater urgency and began to stretch the visitors, with Kean twice going close early in the second half.
Charles was called into action with a sharp save to deny the striker, while a defensive mix-up almost gifted Riccardo Calafiori an opener.
Italy strike breakthrough
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 56th minute, and it was worth the wait. After Northern Ireland partially cleared a cross, the ball dropped invitingly for Tonali on the edge of the area.
The midfielder struck a superb half-volley that skidded off the surface and beat Charles for pace, sparking relief among the Italian supporters.
With the deadlock broken, Italy began to assert control. Chances continued to come, with Kean at the centre of the action. The forward forced another save from Charles and even attempted an acrobatic overhead kick that drifted just wide, as Northern Ireland struggled to relieve the mounting pressure.
Despite their defensive efforts, the visitors found it increasingly difficult to contain Italy’s movement in the final third.
Their own attacking threat remained limited, with Conor Bradley and Shea Charles attempting to drive transitions, but clear opportunities were scarce.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 80th minute. Tonali turned provider this time, clipping a ball over the top of the Northern Ireland defence. Kean showed composure and strength to cut inside his marker before firing a left-footed effort that went in via the post, effectively sealing the contest.
Northern Ireland exit with credit, having executed their game plan effectively for much of the match. However, their lack of attacking threat ultimately proved costly.
Italy will now turn their attention to the play-off final, where they will face either Wales, knowing that one more win stands between them and a return to the world’s biggest stage.
