The biggest night for Canadian music has arrived!
The 55th annual Juno Awards, presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, will take place on Sunday, March 29th, starting at 8 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. This time around, the ceremony will be held in Hamilton, Ont., at the newly renovated TD Coliseum.
Toronto-born comedian Mae Martin, who, ironically, was a Juno nominee for their 2023 Netflix comedy special SAP, is hosting this year’s awards ceremony.
If you’re looking to tune into the awards ceremony (which you totally should), you can do so through a variety of CBC outlets. Specifically, the Junos will air on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, and CBC Listen, be streamed globally at CBCMusic.ca/Junos, and be broadcast on CBC Music’s YouTube Channel.
There will also be live performances by Canadian artists such as Alessia Cara, Allison Russell, The Arkells, The Beaches, Daniel Caesar, Sarah McLachlan, and more. The full list can be viewed on the Junos website.
Now, onto the nominees. This time around, there are two tied for most nominations: Calgary’s Tate McRae and Stratford, Ontario’s Justin Bieber have six each. Bieber is up for Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year (Daisies, Speed Demon, Yukon), Fan Choice Award, Album of the Year (SWAG II), Pop Album of the Year (SWAG II), and Single of the Year (Daisies). McRae is up for Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year (Purple Lace Bra, Revolving Door, Sports Car), Fan Choice Award, Album of the Year (So Close to What), Pop Album of the Year (So Close to What), and Single of the Year (Sports Car).
Toronto’s The Weeknd sits in second with five nominations. These include Artist of the Year, Fan Choice Award, Album of the Year (Hurry Up Tomorrow), Pop Album of the Year (Hurry Up Tomorrow), and Single of the Year (Cry for Me).
Vancouver-based musician bbno$ also racked up a few Juno nominations, which include Artist of the Year, Fan Choice Award, and Pop Album of the Year (bbno$).
The full list of artists can be found here.
Interestingly, other awards will be handed out during the ceremony. Joni Mitchell will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Nelly Furtado will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
Notably, major names like Justin Bieber, Tate McRae, and The Weeknd will reportedly be no-shows at the event despite being nominated.
