A new startup aims to turn your regular wristwatch into a smartwatch with a neat little device.

The team at Chicago-based Ganance has developed a coin-sized sensor called the Heir. The device, which is only 30mm in diameter and 3mm thick, sticks to the back of your watch via a microsuction disc and fits most watches. Thankfully, there are also no magnets on the Heir that could interfere with the device’s internal mechanical movements.

The Heir can reportedly track steps, distance, and calories. Once the data is recorded, it can be located in either the Ganance iPhone app or the Apple Health app. There is reportedly an Android version of the Ganance app coming, alongside support for Google’s Health Connect, but New Atlas notes it will arrive around late June.

In addition to the fitness metrics, you can also use the Heir to control media playback by tapping it. While a single tap controls playback, a double tap lets you skip a song. If you receive a call or text, the device will vibrate to notify you. If you find the vibration too soft or too hard, you can adjust its strength to one of three levels. The good news is that you can actually disable the tap input or the sensor itself if you want.

According to Android Authority, the Heir is reportedly getting adaptive goals, a silent alarm, WhatsApp/Slack vibrations, task reminders, and weather-based recommendations.

Interestingly, it was also noted that the device lasts only 42 hours on a single charge and will need to be recharged fairly frequently.

The Heir is currently available for pre-order for US$149 (approx. C$207). There is also a band available for US$39 (approx. C$54), and they can be bundled for US$169 (approx. C$234).
