Craig Melvin has worked alongside a number of figures through his work on Today. Recently, he took time to praise one co-host in particular during the show. This took place after the co-host was recently criticized by media personality Megyn Kelly.
Craig Melvin First Joined The Today Team In 2018
Melvin first joined NBC with an affiliate network in South Carolina while still in high school. In 2011, he became a daytime anchor for MSNBC and a contributor for NBC News.
In recent years, Melvin has become known for his work with Today. He was promoted to weekday anchor on the show in 2018. By 2025, he took over Hoda Kotb’s role on the show.
However, Kotb has made her return to the show to fill in for Savannah Guthrie, who stepped away from Today after the disappearance of her mother, Nancy. Recently, Melvin praised Kotb for stepping up during this time.
Kelly Was Previously Critical Of An Interview Hoda Kotb Had With Savannah Guthrie
During the episode, Melvin opened things up by sharing, “I do think we should mention something else here, before we take a quick break.” Turning to Kotb, he continued, “You’ve sat here for a few weeks, you’ve got a lot happening in your life, you’ve got two girls you’re raising by yourself. And when the coach called and they said, ‘We need someone to come in and pinch hit,’ you didn’t bat an eye.”
Jenna Bush Hager also weighed in, sharing, “We needed you.” This caused Kotb to share, “When we say family, we mean it.” The anchors then celebrated Savannah Guthrie’s expected return on April 6, 2026.

The exchange came out after Kotb was recently criticized by Megyn Kelly following an interview with Savannah Guthrie on her podcast and SiriusXM radio show. This interview was released in three parts, airing on March 26 and March 27.
At the time, she shared, “I’m just going to take a moment and give a little editorial of my own, from a journalistic perspective, you don’t have to comment on this. With respect, I have to say, I think Hoda Kotb fell down, and I don’t think she was the woman for the interview.”
Kelly continued, “I’m sorry, but Hoda kept wiping away tears that weren’t there either. This was acting on Hoda Kotb’s part, and it was a distraction and an unnecessary one,” feeling that this drew attention away from Savannah. She also criticized Kotb’s lack of follow-up questions during the interview.
