Snap is laying off roughly 16 per cent of its global workforce amid a company-wide shift to AI to improve company profits.

According to a memo sent to employees by Snap CEO Evan Siegel, the cuts will affect roughly 1000 full-time employees. An additional 300 open roles are also being closed.

“While these changes are necessary to realize Snap’s long-term potential, we believe that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence enable our teams to reduce repetitive work, increase velocity, and better support our community, partners, and advertisers,” Spiegel said within the memo. “We have already witnessed small squads leveraging AI tools to drive meaningful progress across several important initiatives.”

Spiegel also noted in the internal memo that the company was “facing a crucible (important, life-altering) moment” that needed a new way of working that is faster, and more efficient while pivoting towards profitable growth,” referencing AI and the company’s need to increase profitability.

According to The Verge, the move is expected to save Snap approximately $500 million by the second half of 2026. The tech giant, known for products like Snapchat and Bitmoji, had about 5,261 full-time employees around December 2025, and now joins the growing list of tech companies (Meta, Amazon, Rogers, to name a few) that have announced significant layoffs this year.
