Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario delivered a first round upset at the BMW Open in Munich, Germany on Tuesday. Shapovalov, the 39th ranked player in the world, beat the Netherlands’s Tallon Griekspoor, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Griekspoor was the eighth seed in Munich, and is currently ranked 32nd in the world.

A key statistic in the match was winning percentage on the second serve. Shapovalov won 75% of the points and Griekspoor won 52%.

Shapovalov also saw Griekspoor’s serve extremely well. He had 12 break point opportunities, where he broke Griekspoor four times.

This was Shapovalov’s first career win over Griekspoor. They had played against each other once before with Griekspoor winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the second round of the 2024 Geneva Open. That tournament was also on clay.

Next up for Shapovalov, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, is Fabian Marozsan of Hungary. Marozsan is 42nd in the world. This will be their first meeting head-to-head.

Shapovalov is one of two Canadians in the second round of the BMW Open. The other is Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo. After beating Vitaliy Sachko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-2 on Monday, Diallo will face the tournament’s number one seed and third ranked player in the world, Alexander Zverev of Germany. Zverev is a three-time grand slam finalist (2020 United States Open, 2024 French Open and 2025 Australian Open), who has beaten Diallo once before. That came in the first round of the 2026 Australian Open, where Zverev won 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
