Former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Alex Manninger has been killed in his native Austria after his car was struck by a train. He was 48.

Manninger made 64 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, winning both the Premier League and FA Cup, and earned 33 caps for Austria.

Manninger career from Arsenal to Juventus

Manninger began his career in his hometown with Red Bull Salzburg before making history in 1997 as the first Austrian to sign for Arsenal.

Although often behind David Seaman, he stepped in during the 1997-98 season and played a key role as Arsenal secured a domestic double.

His career later took him across Europe, including spells with Juventus, Udinese and FC Augsburg, as well as time in Italy with Siena.

He also signed for Liverpool in 2016, though he did not make a competitive appearance.

Austrian FA and clubs pay tribute

The Austrian Football Association paid tribute to a player it said had represented the country with distinction for many years.

Sporting director Peter Schottel said: “Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch.

“His professionalism, composure and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team.

“His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Manninger was part of Austria’s squad at Euro 2008, hosted in his home country, and remained a respected figure within the national setup long after his international career ended.

Today is a very sad day.

We have lost not only a great athlete, but a man of rare values: humility, dedication, and an exceptional sense of professionalism.
