South African Women’s team made a resounding statement in the opening match of the T20I series against India, securing a clinical six-wicket victory at Kingsmead, Durban, on Friday. In a high-stakes encounter that showcased the growing depth of the Proteas’ roster, the hosts chased down a target of 158 with five balls to spare. While the Indian side displayed flashes of brilliance through captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten knock, they were ultimately outplayed by a South African unit that excelled in all three departments. The win gives South Africa a crucial 1-0 lead in the series, setting a high bar for the remaining matches.

Ayabonga Khaka’s fiery spell halts India to a modest total

Opting to bat first, India looked poised for a massive score during a brisk 46-run opening stand between Shafali Verma (34 off 22) and Smriti Mandhana. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Player of the Match Ayabonga Khaka was introduced into the attack. Khaka delivered a masterclass in disciplined T20 bowling, finishing with remarkable figures of 3/16 across her four overs.

Khaka first broke the backbone of the Indian top order by dismissing the dangerous Mandhana for 13, caught by Laura Wolvaardt. While Jemimah Rodrigues (36) and Harmanpreet (47*) attempted to rebuild with a 71-run partnership, Khaka returned in the death overs to ensure India didn’t achieve a finishing flourish. She accounted for the explosive Richa Ghosh (5) and Arundhati Reddy (3), utilizing a mix of subtle pace variations and pinpoint accuracy. Her economy rate of 4.00 was the standout statistic of the innings, effectively stifling India’s aggression and restricting them to 157/7—a total that felt 15-20 runs short on a true Durban surface.

South Africa’s pursuit of 158 was characterized by a blend of captain’s composure and raw middle-order power. Despite losing Sune Luus early for 13, captain Wolvaardt anchored the innings with a sublime 51 off 39 balls. Wolvaardt’s innings was a clinic in finding gaps, as she struck eight boundaries to keep the required run rate under control. Her ability to rotate strike against the Indian spinners, Shreyanka Patil (2/26) and Deepti Sharma, provided the necessary stability for the aggressive hitters to follow.

The real spark in the chase came from Annerie Dercksen, whose unbeaten 44 off 34 balls proved to be the decisive factor. Dercksen took the game away from India in the middle overs, striking five boundaries and three massive sixes. Her partnership with Wolvaardt added 52 runs in just 33 balls, effectively deflating the Indian bowling attack. Despite a late wobble where Anneke Bosch fell for 8, Chloe Tryon (18*) provided the finishing touches. South Africa reached 158/4 in 19.1 overs, capitalizing on 14 extras gifted by the Indian bowlers. The victory was a testament to South Africa’s tactical maturity, leaving India with much to ponder ahead of the second T20I.
