The Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a significant blow in their IPL 2026 campaign after rising talent Ayush Mhatre suffered a serious hamstring injury during their recent clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The 18-year-old, who had quickly emerged as one of CSK’s brightest sparks this season, is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks, according to batting coach Michael Hussey.

Mhatre’s absence couldn’t have come at a worse time. With CSK languishing at seventh on the points table, his aggressive contributions—201 runs at a blistering strike rate of over 177—had been one of the few positives in an otherwise inconsistent campaign. As they gear up for a crucial encounter against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, the team management faces a pressing question: who can fill the void at the top?

3 potential replacments for Ayush Mhatre in CSK’s remainging IPL 2026 campaign

    1) Urvil Patel

One of the most straightforward replacements could be Urvil Patel, a dynamic batter known for his fearless approach in domestic T20 cricket. Patel’s reputation as a power-hitter aligns closely with Mhatre’s attacking mindset, making him a natural candidate to slot into the top order.

The Gujarat-based batter thrives on taking bowlers on from the outset, boasting a strike rate close to 180 in domestic competitions. His inclusion could allow skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to anchor the innings more comfortably while maintaining the team’s aggressive intent during the Powerplay.

For a side that has often struggled to build momentum early in matches this season, Patel’s presence could inject much-needed energy and unpredictability at the top.

    2) MS Dhoni

Another intriguing option lies in the possible return of MS Dhoni. While not a direct replacement for Mhatre in the top order, Dhoni’s inclusion—likely as an Impact Player—could significantly reshape CSK’s batting strategy.

If Dhoni is declared fit, his presence would allow the team management to reshuffle the batting lineup with greater confidence. Players like Moeen Ali or Matthew Short could be promoted up the order to fill Mhatre’s role, knowing that Dhoni’s experience and finishing ability can stabilize the innings later on.

Beyond the numbers, Dhoni’s leadership and calm presence often have a profound psychological impact on the team—something CSK may desperately need during this turbulent phase of their campaign.

    3) Kartik Sharma

A more unconventional but potentially rewarding option is Kartik Sharma, a young wicketkeeper-batter who has been waiting for his opportunity this season. CSK invested heavily in Sharma during the auction, signaling their belief in his long-term potential. Introducing Kartik into the playing XI would not only provide a fresh perspective but also add a valuable left-handed dimension to the batting lineup. This could be particularly useful against spin-heavy attacks, where a left-right combination often disrupts bowlers’ rhythm.

While handing responsibility to an untested player in a high-pressure situation carries risks, CSK have historically backed young talents—and Kartik could be the next beneficiary of that philosophy. Replacing a player like Mhatre, especially one who brought both consistency and explosiveness, is no easy task. The decision taken by head coach Stephen Fleming and captain Gaikwad will likely shape the remainder of CSK’s season.
