The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, witnessed a night of absolute dominance and unexpected comedy on Sunday. In the 29th match of IPL 2026, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced off against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a high-stakes encounter that solidified Punjab’s status as the team to beat this season. While the match itself was a masterclass in power-hitting, it was a light-hearted moment involving Punjab’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, that stole the digital spotlight after the final ball was bowled.

Shreyas Iyer’s quirky ‘shoe-borrowing’ act saves the day for PBKS captain in IPL 2026

Winning a match by 54 runs usually puts a captain in high spirits, but Iyer found himself in a slight wardrobe predicament just as the post-match presentation was about to begin. Following the Kings’ victory, Iyer was seen relaxing on the turf in comfortable slippers. However, strict BCCI protocols mandate that players must attend official presentations in proper footwear and team kits—violations of which can result in hefty fines.

In a video that has since gone viral, a frantic yet amused Iyer was alerted to his presentation duties. Realizing he didn’t have his sneakers nearby, he didn’t skip a beat and approached a nearby cameraman. With a grin, the PBKS skipper borrowed the technician’s shoes to ensure he was match-ready for the cameras. Fans were quick to praise Iyer’s grounded nature, watching him strut toward the trophy podium in oversized shoes that clearly weren’t his own. It was a refreshing human moment in the high-pressure environment of the IPL, proving that even at the top of the table, there’s always room for a little improvisation.

    Here’s the video:

Punjab Kings’ historic unbeaten streak reaches new heights

While Iyer’s footwear was the talk of social media, the Punjab Kings’ performance on the field was nothing short of legendary. By dismantling LSG, the Kings extended their unbeaten run to six matches (5 wins, 1 No Result), marking the best start to a season in the franchise’s history. This clinical victory pushed them to 11 points, firmly cementing their position at the summit of the IPL 2026 points table.

The foundation of this win was a record-breaking 182-run partnership for the second wicket between young southpaws Priyansh Arya (93 off 37) and Cooper Connolly (87 off 46). The duo turned the game into a highlights reel, smashing a combined 16 sixes to propel PBKS to a mammoth 254/7—the highest total of the season.

LSG’s chase, despite spirited efforts from Rishabh Pant (43) and Aiden Markram (42), never really threatened the target as the Punjab bowling unit, led by Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh, maintained a stranglehold throughout the middle overs. Reflecting on the win, Iyer called the batting display jaw-dropping, noting the immense composure shown by his young players. With a six-day break ahead, the invincibles of 2026 look refreshed and ready for their next challenge in Delhi.
