Craig Melvin recently took a bit of a break from his work on Today. However, he recently showed off a whole new look with fans on social media. Since then, fans, and even Melvin’s colleagues, have been sharing their reactions.
Craig Melvin Was Absent From Today During The Week Of April 13
Melvin first worked for NBC News and MSNBC around 2011. In 2018, he became a weekday news anchor on Today, joining the show’s third hour.
Melvin would take over for Hoda Kotb after her departure in early 2025. However, he was recently absent from the show during the week of April 13.
This was because the Today co-host was on vacation with his family. Taking to social media, he opened up about his break from the show with fans, all the while showing off a bold new look.
The normally clean-shaven Melvin could be seen sporting quite a bit of stubble. In the carousel post shared on Instagram, he even made sure to share his face both from the front and in profile to let fans get a good look.
Melvin explained that it was his daughter’s idea to share his new look. As he wrote in the caption, “My daughter wants me to post what I look like at the end of vacation week with no shaving and hair care.”
“She’s not on ig bc she’s so young but seems to understand social media shaming nonetheless. Back to work tomorrow. See you there.”
Melvin’s colleagues shared their own reactions to the post in the comments. With tongue firmly in cheek, Carson Daly shared, “You look terrible,” complete with a laughing-crying face emoji.
Melvin Has Since Returned To The Show, Answering Fans’ Questions If He Was Keeping His New Look
While Melvin was on vacation, Kotb had recently returned to fill in. This also comes out around the time that Savannah Guthrie returned to Today. She had previously stepped away from the show amid her mother Nancy’s disappearance back in early February.
Melvin could be seen back on the show on April 20. As could be seen on the show, he had shaven his face in time for his big return.
