In the aftermath of Delhi Capitals’ heavy defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, former Australia skipper Aaron Finch has openly criticised captain Axar Patel for his on-field decisions, particularly the surprising underuse of his frontline spin options. Finch’s remarks have sparked a wider debate around tactics, leadership, and trust in key bowlers during high-pressure games.

    Spin strategy raises eyebrows

Delhi Capitals entered the contest with what many consider one of the most reliable spin combinations in the tournament—Axar and Kuldeep Yadav. However, the duo bowled just four overs combined, a decision that left fans and experts perplexed. Axar finished with figures of 2-0-23-1, while Kuldeep went wicketless in his two overs.

Instead, part-time spinner Nitish Rana completed his full quota of four overs. While Rana is known for providing occasional breakthroughs, relying on him over established match-winners raised serious questions about Delhi’s bowling approach.

Finch, speaking after the match, expressed his disbelief at the strategy, suggesting that such decisions undermine the importance of experienced bowlers. He emphasised that in a format like T20, backing your best options is often the difference between control and chaos.

Aaron Finch lambasts Axar Patel for not taking enough responsibility

Delhi’s think tank appeared to base their approach on match-ups. With Sunrisers Hyderabad fielding aggressive left-handers like Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, the team seemed wary of using spinners who traditionally turn the ball into left-handers. However, Finch argued that such tactical adjustments should not come at the expense of confidence in core players.

“We’ve been sitting there scratching our heads, haven’t we? Your two Indian premier spin bowlers, Axar Patel, the skipper [2-0-23-1], Kuldeep Yadav [2-0-30-0], they bowled four overs between them. A part-time offspinner in Nitish Rana has wheeled out four overs. To me that makes no sense,” Finch told ESPNcricinfo.

He pointed out that Axar, as captain and a senior international cricketer, carries the responsibility of stepping up in challenging situations rather than avoiding them. According to Finch, a captain’s reluctance to take on a difficult match-up sends a concerning message about intent and leadership. He stressed that elite players must trust their skills, even when conditions or opposition line-ups appear unfavourable.

“It’s the responsibility of your captain, your senior player, your retained player, your best bowler, Indian bowler, he’s one of your core bowlers in the Indian cricket team. That’s no small bit. He’s a double World Cup winner. So the fact that he doesn’t trust himself to execute under pressure and to defend himself against any left-handers – as soon as a left-hander walks to the crease, not for me today, thanks. To me that says more about his attitude towards it than anything else,” added Finch.

Abhishek Sharma’s carnage defines the match

The match itself was dominated by a sensational innings from Abhishek, who dismantled the Delhi bowling attack with remarkable ease. The left-hander smashed an unbeaten 135 off just 68 deliveries, showcasing a blend of power, timing, and fearless stroke play. His knock propelled Sunrisers Hyderabad to a daunting total of 242/2 in 20 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Delhi Capitals, in response, never found momentum in their chase and eventually fell short by 47 runs.

Abhishek’s innings not only highlighted Delhi’s bowling struggles but also amplified scrutiny on their tactical choices. With minimal pressure applied during the middle overs, SRH capitalised fully, turning the contest into a one-sided affair.
