After months of rumours and leaks, Ubisoft has pulled back the curtain on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.

As the name suggests, it’s a remake of Ubisoft Montreal’s beloved 2013 pirate action-adventure game, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and it will launch on July 9, 2026. In a video presentation, Welsh actor Matt Ryan, who returns as protagonist Edward Kenway, walked us through the overall vision behind the Ubisoft Singapore-developed remake and the many changes being made within it.

First off, Ryan confirmed that this is a “faithful remake” that’s been “totally rebuilt from the ground up with the latest version of the Anvil Engine and enriched with lots of new additions.” This means that it’s the same story of Edward’s journey to create a pirate republic as he seeks freedom, power and riches.

Enhancing all of that in Resynced are highly detailed character models and updated motion-capture, the latter of which was recorded at Ubisoft’s Toronto studio. “The Caribbean world reaches a new level of immersion and realism powered by high resolution textures, enhanced lighting, strikingly detailed environments and a new dynamic weather system. Even underwater exploration is more expansive, more beautiful and more perilous than ever before,” said Ryan. In some gameplay footage, we see these stunning photorealistic visuals across ports, jungles, and even underwater as Edward is attacked by a shark.

Additionally, Ubisoft is teasing new quests and narrative arcs for some of the supporting cast, including Blackbeard and Stede, as well as a new scene with Edward’s wife, penned by Darby McDevitt, the original writer of Black Flag and many other Assassin’s Creed games.

Ubisoft also noted that the modern-day segments have been revamped. “For Black Flag Resynced, we have approached it in a way that focuses on Edward’s journey while still connecting his memories to the Animus. The modern-day rifts in Resynced will feature new moments that focus on Edward’s internal struggles,” teased creative director Paul Fu.

In addition to the visual and story changes, Ubisoft outlined how Resynced overhauls Black Flag‘s core gameplay. First off, Ryan mentioned that combat has been “entirely reworked into an action-oriented experience,” meaning “every move now plays a specific role with faster, more fluid attacks and combos.” In gameplay footage, we see Edward chaining together attacks, executing perfect parries for instant kills and up to four consecutive takedowns and yanking enemies with his rope dart, all with a greater sense of speed and rhythm now. You’ll also be able to use walls, ledges and breakable objects like boxes against enemies.

Parkour, meanwhile, has been refined with new animations and moves like free jumps, back ejects and side ejects. Additionally, Edward can now freely crouch, a feature introduced with last year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which promises to further open up stealth. And on that note, Ryan noted that Ubisoft has acknowledged that “a pretty big pain point” in Black Flag was the instant fail states if you were discovered during tailing and eavesdropping missions, so they’ve been removed in Resynced. Now, the target will simply react to your presence accordingly, like a fight breaking out.

Another major element of Black Flag, the naval combat, is getting some changes. For one, Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw, now has more firepower, including alternate fire upgrades for every weapon. Further, three brand new officers have been introduced: Lucy Baldwin, The Padre and Dead Man Smith, and they each have their own unique abilities and narrative quest lines. Other changes include a new cat or monkey pet for your ship and new shanties while you’re sailing the seas. (It’s also worth noting that musician Woodkid, who did some of the music for Assassin’s Creed Revelations, is contributing new songs to Resynced, although we didn’t get to hear any of them yet.)

And throughout all of these changes, Ubisoft wanted to stress that this isn’t an RPG like many recent Assassin’s Creed games have been. “With Black Flag Resynced, we set out to reconnect with the heart of Black Flag. From the start, the intention was clear: deliver a faithful and enriched experience grounded in what players loved,” said game director Richard Knight.

Ubisoft also noted that many of the original developers of Black Flag have returned for Resynced. Notably, Ubisoft Singapore was one of Ubisoft Montreal’s main collaborators on the original game, so that passing of the torch for the remake is particularly appropriate.

Finally, Ubisoft noted that Resynced won’t include Black Flag‘s multiplayer or DLC because a clear choice was made to “fully focus on Edward’s adventures in the Caribbean.” That said, the company confirmed that the original game containing all of that content will remain available to purchase.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will launch on July 9 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, plus Ubisoft+ on day one. A collector’s edition will also be available that includes a statue of Edward sitting on a pirate ship chest, a notebook with Edward’s diary entries about his adventures, a brooch, a cloth map and “other goodies.”
