Élise Girard has been shooting Emma Doucet (working title), her fourth feature after Belleville Tokyo (2011), Strange Birds (selected in the 2017 Berlinale Forum) and Sidonie In Japan (screened in Venice’s Giornate degli Autori line-up in 2023), since 14 April.
The lead role is played by Luxembourgish star Vicky Krieps (revealed to international audiences in 2018 via Phantom Thread, awarded the Un Certain Regard section’s Best Actress trophy in 2023 for Corsage, nominated for the 2022 Best Actress César thanks to Hold Me Tight and in the same category at the 2026 Lumière Awards via Love Me Tender). She’s joined by Alex Lutz (named Best Actor at the 2019 César and Lumière awards thanks to Guy), Belgium’s Yannick Renier (the winner of the 2026 René Prize via Reflection in a Dead Diamond), Carole Franck (Gold For Dogs, Little Tickles) and youngster Abel Memmi (in his feature film debut).
Written by the director, the story follows Emma who’s nearing forty and who leads a quiet life divided between her job, her teenage son and a charitable role as a public writer, which sees her penning love letters on behalf of other people. She’s a single mother and she limits herself to an affair with a married man, but an unexpected encounter soon turns her life on its head. Confronted with the passing of time and the many sacrifices she’s made, Emma realises that it’s time to write her own love story, for the first time in her life…
Emma Doucet is being produced by Sébastien Haguenauer on behalf of 10:15! Productions (who teamed up with the director on her previous film), and executively co-produced by Julien Naveau for Le Plein de Super, alongside Arte France Cinéma, Germany’s Lupa Films and Belgium’s Stenola Productions. Pre-purchased by Arte, Be tv, Proximus and BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk), the feature film also enjoys support from the Grand Accord Européen, the French-German co-production mini-treaty, the Ile-de-France and Bavaria regions, and the DFFF (Deutscher Filmförderfonds). The 28-day film shoot will unfold in Paris, Normandy and Bavaria with Sébastien Buchmann (nominated for the 2023 Cinematography Lumière via The Passengers of the Night) heading up photography. The film’s release in French cinemas will fall to Les Films du Losange. International sales will be handled by Totem Films.
For the record, 10:15! Productions is also currently overseeing Peter Dourountzis’ Rascal (screened in Cannes’ 2020 Official Selection) and Ina Weisse’s co-production Cicadas (selected for the 2025 Berlinale’s Panorama section).
