Dallas Stars centre Wyatt Johnston of Toronto, Ontario recorded his second National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoff overtime winner on Wednesday. He accomplished the feat in a 4-3 Stars win over the Minnesota Wild at the Grand Casino Arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota. With the win, the Stars lead the best out of seven first round playoff series two games to one.
Johnston broke a 3-3 tie at 12:10 of the second overtime period from Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson on the power-play. He was one of two Canadians to score for the Stars in the game. The other was Canadian Olympic gold medalist Matt Duchene of Haliburton, Ontario who tied the game at three from Mikko Rantanen and Johnston at 10:18 of the third period on the power-play.
Johnston and Duchene also had multi-point games. Johnston had one goal and one assist for two points, and Duchene had one goal and two assists for three points. Duchene won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
Johnston’s first overtime winner came on April 27, 2024 in a 3-2 Stars win over the Vegas Golden Knights. The goal came from Robertson and Ryan Suter at 16:23 of the extra period and was in game three of the Western Conference first round.
