Nottingham Forest produced a devastating display to thrash Sunderland 5-0 at the Stadium of Light, delivering a result that could prove pivotal in their fight for Premier League survival.

A relentless first-half performance effectively ended the contest before the interval, with Forest scoring four times in a breathtaking 20-minute spell that left the home crowd stunned and streaming for the exits long before full-time.

Forest run riot in ruthless first half

Sunderland began brightly enough, carving out an early opportunity when Chris Rigg was played through, but his tame effort was comfortably gathered by Matz Sels. That would prove a brief moment of promise in an otherwise punishing evening for the hosts.

Forest’s opener arrived in the 17th minute, albeit in scrappy fashion. A well-worked corner routine caused problems in the Sunderland box, and after Igor Jesus headed the ball back across goal, it deflected off Trai Hume and into the net for an unfortunate own goal.

The second goal, just after the half-hour mark, summed up Sunderland’s struggles. Goalkeeper Robin Roefs attempted to play out from the back under pressure, only to gift possession to Morgan Gibbs-White. His quick thinking released Chris Wood, who kept his composure to finish and double Forest’s lead.

Forest were now playing with confidence and precision, and a third goal quickly followed. Another clever set-piece routine saw Igor Jesus nod the ball into the path of Gibbs-White, who swept home to cap a fine individual display.

By the 37th minute, the contest was effectively over. Sunderland failed to clear their lines from a free-kick, and when the ball dropped kindly for Jesus on the edge of the box, he powered a volley into the net to make it 4-0.

    Control and a late flourish

With such a commanding lead, Forest understandably took their foot off the gas in the second half. The tempo dropped, and chances became fewer, though the visitors remained organised and disciplined defensively.

Sunderland thought they had pulled a goal back midway through the half when Dan Ballard headed home from close range after a looping cross, but a VAR review ruled it out. The decision went against the hosts due to a foul on Sels in the build-up, extinguishing any faint hopes of a comeback.

Despite enjoying more possession after the break, Sunderland struggled to create clear openings. Their best chance came when Enzo Le Fee unleashed a powerful effort from distance, only for Sels to produce an outstanding save to preserve his clean sheet.

Forest, meanwhile, were content to manage the game, making substitutions and conserving energy with an eye on upcoming fixtures. Even without registering a shot for much of the second half, their earlier dominance ensured there was never any danger of the result slipping.

There was still time for one final blow in stoppage time. Taiwo Awoniyi, showing sharp awareness inside the box, opted to square the ball rather than shoot, allowing Elliot Anderson to slide home from close range and complete the scoring at 5-0.

    A statement result

The win extends Forest’s unbeaten run and provides a significant boost in their battle to avoid relegation.

It was not just the margin of victory, but the manner of the performance, particularly in the first half, that will give their supporters real belief for the weeks ahead.
