President Trump struck a conciliatory tone with the press Saturday after a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents Association dinner, forcing him to scrap a speech in which he promised to be “rough” on reporters.

Speaking at the White House, just hours after a gunman barged into the ballroom of the Washington Hilton, Mr. Trump hailed the reporters for their unified and “responsible” coverage of the shooting.

“I want to thank the press, the media. You have been very responsible in your coverage,” Mr. Trump said.

“The event was dedicated to freedom of speech. That was supposed to bring together members of both parties with members of the press, and, in a certain way, it did,” the president said.

“The room was totally unified. It was a very beautiful thing to see,” Mr. Trump continued.

He made it clear that he was planning a different tactic for the press before the shooting.

“I was all set to really rip it, and I said to my people, ‘This would be the most inappropriate speech ever made,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “So I have to save it. I don’t know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.”

“I think I’m going to be probably very nice. I’ll be very boring the next time, but we’re going to have a great event,” Mr. Trump added, saying he wants the WHCA to hold the dinner again within the next month.

Ahead of Saturday’s soiree, Mr. Trump expected to blast the media in his speech and bolt from the room immediately after ripping the press.

Trump had planned to leave the White House Correspondents’ Association event after making his speech, so he would have missed the presentation of press awards — likely for news stories that were highly critical of him.

Saturday marked the first time Mr. Trump attended the dinner as president. He has boycotted previous dinners because, he said, “the press was extraordinarily bad to me, fake news all, right from the beginning of my first term.”

Mr. Trump snubbed the event for his entire first term.
