Jack Grealish says his recovery from a season-ending foot injury is progressing well, with the midfielder encouraged by the latest feedback from his surgeon as he works towards a Premier League return.

The 30-year-old, currently on loan at Everton from Manchester City, underwent surgery on a stress fracture sustained during a 1-0 win against former club Aston Villa in January.

Now, around 10 weeks into his rehabilitation, Grealish says the signs are positive.

“I feel really good in myself now,” he told BBC Sport. “I had a 10-week Zoom call with the surgeon, who said it couldn’t be looking any better at this stage.

“So for me, it’s happy days and so good to hear news like that.”

Grealish made 22 appearances in all competitions for Everton prior to the injury, contributing two goals and six assists during his spell on Merseyside.

    Grealish reflects on injury frustration

Despite the positive update, Grealish admitted the mental challenge of being sidelined has been difficult, particularly watching from the stands.

“As a footballer it’s always difficult being injured,” he said. “I came to the Merseyside derby game and it got me a bit emotional, because it’s something I miss doing so much.”

The England international was quick to praise Everton for their support throughout his recovery, highlighting the role of staff and team-mates in helping him through the process.

“I can’t thank them enough for the way they’ve been with me since I’ve been injured – they’ve been brilliant. From the staff, to the players, to the manager.”

Grealish has one year remaining on his Manchester City contract, with Everton understood to be interested in making the move permanent, though a deal would likely depend on negotiations over City’s valuation.

Grealish continues ambassador role with Special Olympics GB

Away from the pitch, Grealish has also been active in his role as principal ambassador for Special Olympics Great Britain, recently extending his involvement with the organisation for a further three years.

The midfielder invited a group of athletes who completed the London Marathon to Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium this week, praising their achievements.

“To have 10 of them run the London Marathon was incredible,” he said. “Years ago people might not have thought that would happen – it’s unbelievable.”

Grealish has long supported the organisation, which provides sporting opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and says the cause is personal to him.

“My little sister has cerebral palsy – it’s something that’s close to me, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to be involved in,” he added.

“I go through life trying to make people happy… all I want to do is to help them as much as I can.”
