The iconic Wankhede Stadium played host to a run-fest of epic proportions on Wednesday, as the 41st Match of the IPL 2026 season saw Mumbai Indians (MI) lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Despite a mammoth first-innings total, the five-time champions slumped to their sixth defeat of the league stage, a result that has effectively pulled the plug on their 2026 campaign. In a season where they were expected to dominate, MI now find themselves languishing at the bottom of the table, searching for answers in the debris of another failed defense.

Ravichandran Ashwin has dismissed Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes in IPL 2026 after their sixth loss

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, known for his sharp analytical mind, has officially called time on Mumbai’s chances of reaching the top four. Speaking on his YouTube channel following MI’s defensive collapse against SRH, Ashwin expressed a mix of disbelief and sympathy for the franchise.

“I’m shocked by how Mumbai played this season. My mind isn’t processing how this is even possible, watching Mumbai Indians, I actually feel sorry for them. They were my favourite team before the tournament, but I’ve had this feeling many times that it’s their game—that Mumbai Indians will come back. It did not happen,” Ashwin remarked.

Ashwin was particularly dismissive of the “mathematical possibility” that often keeps fans hopeful. When asked if MI could pull off a miracle by winning their remaining six games, his response was a firm reality check.

“I don’t think so. They gave away 220 against KKR. No other team gave away that many runs against them. They are also not able to chase big scores like 230-240; they couldn’t even get 208 against CSK. If there is a change in the wicket, their batting struggles. If the wicket is flat, their bowling struggles,” he added.

The match itself was a statistical anomaly that highlighted MI’s bowling woes. Batting first, Mumbai posted a formidable 243/5, powered by a breathtaking unbeaten century from Ryan Rickelton (123 off 55 balls). Rickelton’s knock, featuring 11 boundaries and 8 towering sixes, was supported by Will Jacks’ explosive 46. At the innings break, the Wankhede crowd believed the points were secure.

However, Sunrisers Hyderabad had other plans. Chasing 244, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma dismantled the MI attack from the first ball, racing to 92/0 in the Powerplay. Head was the chief aggressor, smashing 76 off just 30 balls, including 9 sixes, at a strike rate of 253.33.

The middle-over collapse—where SRH lost three wickets for four runs, briefly gave MI hope, but Heinrich Klaasen extinguished it with clinical precision. Klaasen’s unbeaten 65 off 30 balls ensured there were no further hiccups. Supported by a late cameo from Salil Arora (30 off 10), SRH reached 249/4 in just 18.4 overs. Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s efforts, the rest of the MI bowling unit proved expensive, with Ashwani Kumar conceding 41 in just 2 overs. SRH’s 6-wicket victory with 8 balls to spare serves as the final nail in the coffin for Mumbai’s 2026 aspirations.
