As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season enters its final stages, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly shifting its focus from the scoreboard to the sidelines. Amid growing concerns over team discipline and the sanctity of the bio-bubble-like environments, the board is set to deliberate on a stringent new policy aimed at curbing what officials have termed ‘Girlfriend Culture.’

BCCI is set to roll out fresh regulations aimed at restricting ‘Girlfriend Culture’

The move, first reported by Dainik Jagran, marks a significant pivot in how the board manages players’ personal lives during high-stakes tournaments. While wives and immediate family members have traditionally been allowed to stay with players under specific guidelines, the increasing presence of non-family companions, many of whom are high-profile social media influencers, has triggered a red flag within the BCCI headquarters.

The primary driver behind this sudden crackdown is not just about traditional values but the evolving landscape of digital influence. A senior BCCI official reportedly expressed unease regarding the public profiles of some players’ companions. Several of these individuals command massive followings on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, and more worryingly, some have been linked to promotional content for betting and gaming platforms.

The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is reportedly on high alert. The concern is two-fold:

    1. Information security: In a league where inside information is worth millions to illegal bookmakers, the presence of non-accredited individuals in close proximity to players, especially those whose livelihood depends on sharing their lives online, poses a massive security risk.
    2. Conflict of interest: With the board maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward betting associations, the blurred lines between a player’s personal circle and influencers promoting fantasy sports or surrogate betting sites have become a major point of contention.

Recent incidents in the ongoing 2026 season have only added fuel to the fire. From disciplinary breaches like Rajasthan Royals’ captain Riyan Parag being caught vaping in the dressing room to team managers being pulled up for using mobile phones in the dugout, the BCCI feels that a general laxity has crept into the team environments.

Unified policies and the path to IPL 2027

While IPL franchises are private entities with their own internal codes of conduct, the BCCI is keen on implementing a unified policy. This would ensure that whether a player is representing the National Team or a franchise like Mumbai Indians or RCB, the rules regarding companions remain consistent.

The proposed regulations, which may be finalized in the next general body meeting, could see a return to the pre-2020 era where only immediate family (wives and children) were granted stay-in privileges. According to the reported discussions, the board may even limit the duration of stay for families during long tours to ensure players remain focused on the game.

“Previously, girlfriends were not allowed to stay in players’ hotels in the IPL, but now it has become a trend,” an official noted. By tightening these rules, the BCCI aims to reclaim the professional decorum that has defined the IPL as the world’s premier T20 league. As the 2026 season concludes, the message from the board is clear: the party on the sidelines might be over, but the integrity of the game remains non-negotiable.
