On Monday morning, Telus customers in many northern B.C. communities were left without service for a few hours.

Now, the carrier has revealed that vandals were to blame. In a statement, the company said that the outage was caused by someone trying to steal copper cable who cut through the carrier’s fibre lines.

This led to customers in the Burns Lake, Hazelton, Masset, Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Smithers areas losing internet, TV, home phone and wireless services. Emergency services were available in the meantime until service was fully restored by the evening.

A suspect has not yet been apprehended, with Telus noting that an early RCMP investigation has been launched. Notably, though, we’ve seen a rise in copper cable-related theft efforts over the past several months across Canada, including Bell customers in New Brunswick in March.
