Michael Soroka of Calgary, Alberta recorded his 30th Major League Baseball quality start of his career on Monday. He accomplished the feat in a 1-0 Arizona Diamondbacks win over the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Soroka threw 6 1/3 shutout innings. He gave up three hits and one walk, to go along with five strikeouts. Soroka threw 89 pitches of which 59 pitches were strikes.
Arizona’s lone run in the entire game came in the top of the first inning. With one out, Geraldo Perdomo had a RBI double that scored Corbin Carroll.
This was Soroka’s third quality start of the season. He had his first quality start with the Diamondbacks on April 17 in a 6-3 Diamondbacks win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Soroka then had another quality start with Arizona on May 6 in a 1-0 Diamondbacks loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the loss to Pittsburgh, Soroka only gave up a single run. Ironically, that run too came in the top of the first inning, as he gave up a home run to Brandon Lowe.
For the season, Soroka has a record of five wins and two losses with an earned run average of 3.53. In 43 1/3 innings pitched, he has given up 45 hits, 17 earned runs, four home runs, and 12 walks, to go along with 47 strikeouts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.32.
In Soroka’s career, he has 22 quality starts with the Atlanta Braves, four quality starts with the Washington Nationals, three quality starts with the Diamondbacks, and one quality start with the Chicago White Sox. With the win, the Diamondbacks improved to a record of 20 wins and 20 losses. They are in third place in the National League West, and four games back of the division leading San Diego Padres.
