Just ahead of its 29th May release, A24 has unveiled some fresh, new promo footage for Kane Parsons‘ Backrooms. The horror film is set around the internet phenomenon of a photo of a mysterious liminal space where our reality and rules cease to exist, with the director having previously created a smash-hit YouTube series on the concept.
Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, also set for another horror appearance in Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist reboot adaptation, and Renate Reinsve as a patient and therapist who find themselves wrapped up in the strange paranormal circumstances surrounding the backrooms after Ejiofor’s character goes missing.
Additional cast members include Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.
Parsons has also made a name for himself as A24’s youngest director at 19, a tremendous achievement for his feature debut. His original series on the backrooms began in 2022 and ran in 24 segments, having accumulated a total of 197 million hits, inspired by a Creepypasta post on the extradimensional space.
“The story at large is not pulled through a footage medium, and it goes to places with characters that we haven’t seen before and explores things that I haven’t really touched on yet,” Parsons shared with Dazed. “The Backrooms is not – and never has been – something that I think about as an internet trend or a meme. It’s just a story I genuinely care about, with characters I genuinely care about.”
The film will be backed by a familiar gang in the horror genre, with James Wan, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Chris Ferguson, and Michael Clear sharing production credits.
Backrooms is in cinemas on May 29th.
