Billy Bob Thornton Recently Appeared On The Howie Mandel Does Stuff Podcast
Thornton is an actor and filmmaker, best known to many for directing, writing, and starring in 1991’s Sling Blade. Over the years, he’s been known for appearing in other films, including A Simple Plan, Armageddon, Bad Santa, and Friday Night Lights. He’s also established himself in television roles, including Fargo and Landman.
In his personal life, Thornton has also had a music career. Releasing four solo albums, he is also a vocalist for the band, the Boxmasters.
Recently, Thornton spoke with Howie Mandel on his eponymous Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast. At the moment, he opened up about being on a “very restricted” diet due to his health.
Thornton explained, “I’m allergic to wheat, dairy. I have type AB-negative blood, which is the rarest type in the world. It’s, like, less than 1% of the population of the world has it.” The actor noted the connection between his blood and his dietary needs, noting, “It means you have less digestive enzymes.”
Thornton’s Health Restrictions Caused Issues During A Recent Landman Event
Thornton explained that he learned about his health condition in the 1980s. Adding that he “ate everything” while growing up in Arkansas and Texas, he noted that he still had to deal with “a lot of allergies.
The actor then admitted that he also endured stomach issues as a child. However, he thought it was all something that everyone went through and thought nothing of it. Thornton noted, “I just assumed everybody felt like s*** after they ate. I didn’t know. But anyway, I can’t have dairy, wheat… can’t eat meat, like, you know, pork or beef or any of that stuff.”

Thornton also shared some of the food items he can enjoy. This included a “bowl of blueberries” and “a decaf coffee” he had before the podcast. He also shared that he was “going to have some gluten-free chips with some dairy-free cream cheese” later on.
The actor shared that his food restrictions caused an issue during a recent promotional event for Landman. As he shared, “We were at a Paramount publicity thing the other day. It’s me and [my costar] Sam Elliott… Normally, in these green rooms, they got a spread. You can usually find something. And they had… salami and prosciutto… crackers and… all the starchy things… and I’m like, ‘Well, s*** I can’t have any of this.’”
However, Thornton decided to get creative. He recalled, “In the middle of the cracker thing, they had some grapes… And I got a white grape… And then I saw some spicy Dijon mustard, and I thought, ‘Now, I wonder.’” Since then, he’s discovered “one of the best things I ever had in my lifetime,” sharing that eating them has become a bit of a habit for him.
