Michael Vaughan questions ECB after Jofra Archer continues IPL 2026 stint before England’s Test summer

England’s preparations for the upcoming home Test summer have sparked fresh debate after former skipper Michael Vaughan criticised the ECB over Jofra Archer remaining in IPL 2026 instead of joining the national setup ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s.

With England set to begin their highly anticipated Test series against New Zealand on June 4, Archer’s continued participation in the IPL has become a major talking point. The pace star was not included in England’s squad for the opening Test as the ECB continues to carefully monitor his recovery and workload following multiple injury setbacks over the past few years.

While Archer’s absence from the red-ball squad was expected from a fitness-management perspective, Vaughan believes the larger issue lies in the ECB allowing centrally contracted players to prioritise franchise commitments over international cricket.

Speaking during a discussion on Cricbuzz, Vaughan expressed concern over what he described as a growing imbalance between franchise cricket and the traditional international calendar.

According to Vaughan, several England players have been permitted to complete the full IPL season due to an understanding between the ECB and the BCCI. While he acknowledged the popularity and financial value of franchise leagues, he questioned whether England’s own contracts were losing significance.

“I’m sure he’ll be in the squad (for the second Test). It comes midway through June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Jofra was obviously staying for the full IPL. There’s some contract that the ECB have done with the BCCI that’s allowing all our players to stay for the duration,” Vaughan said.

Vaughan stated that Archer had been supported and financially backed by the ECB during his injury rehabilitation period, which made the situation even more difficult for him to understand. He suggested that England’s central contracts should take precedence, especially when Test cricket is involved. The former batter also warned that international cricket could suffer in the long run if boards continue to allow franchise tournaments to overshadow national duty.

“If that’s the case, I have a problem with England’s contracts because Jofra has been looked after by them for a few years now on a very handsome contract. So who holds the key to that? I believe the international contract outweighs any franchise. Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic. I love them for the players. But I do feel that if we start to put domestic leagues over and above a Test match, I think there’s a real problem now,” Vaughan added.

Archer’s absence remains a major talking point

Archer’s omission from the first Test squad has naturally attracted attention because of his outstanding record at Lord’s and his ability to change games in English conditions. Since bursting onto the international scene, Archer has been viewed as one of England’s most dangerous fast bowlers across formats.

However, repeated elbow and back injuries have severely disrupted his career over the last few seasons. The ECB has therefore adopted a cautious approach toward his return to Test cricket, aiming to avoid another long-term setback. Despite not being selected for the opening Test, there is growing belief that Archer could return for the second match of the series later in June if his fitness continues to improve.

    Debate over franchise cricket continues

Vaughan’s comments have once again highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding the balance between franchise leagues and international commitments. With tournaments like the IPL becoming increasingly influential, cricket boards around the world are facing difficult decisions regarding player workload and scheduling priorities.

Many former cricketers have welcomed the financial opportunities franchise cricket provides, but concerns remain about its impact on Test cricket — a format still considered by many as the pinnacle of the sport. As England prepare for a crucial summer at home, the discussion surrounding Archer’s availability is likely to continue, particularly if the team struggles for penetration in the bowling department during the opening Test against New Zealand.
