The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has delivered its share of high-stakes drama, but few matches have carried as much consequence as the 63rd clash at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Facing a must-win scenario to keep their fading playoff hopes alive, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hosted a high-flying Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). What unfolded on the pitch was a clinical performance by the visitors, culminating in a 5-wicket victory for SRH. While the defeat all but mathematically eliminated the five-time champions from the IPL 2026 playoff race, the real storm ignited after the match in the press room, where long-time head coach Stephen Fleming faced tough questions regarding team leadership and performance.

Stephen Fleming sparks debate by seemingly blaming Ruturaj Gaikwad after CSK’s loss to SRH

The post-match press conference became the focal point of intense discussion as Stephen Fleming dissected CSK’s underwhelming campaign. The spotlight fell squarely on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, whose sluggish innings of 15 runs off 21 balls, devoid of a single boundary, became a microcosm of Chennai’s Powerplay struggles this season.

When questioned about Gaikwad’s form, Fleming did not hold back, offering a candid assessment that many fans interpreted as a public critique of the captain. Fleming pointed out that while rival top-order batters like Sanju Samson have excelled at capitalizing on the fielding restrictions, Gaikwad has found it difficult to generate momentum.

“I’ll start with the powerplay. The key one is wickets, really. Yeah, I think Ruturaj can do more. He’s done more in the past. He’s been a fine player at the top. He hasn’t produced the quantity of runs at the pace of runs (this season) that he’s done in his career,” Fleming stated openly.

However, the former New Zealand captain stopped short of completely isolating his skipper, reminding critics of the immense pressure that comes with replacing an icon like MS Dhoni. Fleming emphasized that Gaikwad is dealing with a transitional squad and learning on the job, offering a firm vote of confidence for the future: “It’s a big transition from having one of the best captains that cricket’s seen running the franchise… going forward, I have no doubt he’ll be a fine captain for this franchise.”

SRH qualify into the IPL 2026 playoffs with a dominant win over CSK

While CSK’s camp was left to answer for its shortcomings, Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrated an emphatic entry into the IPL 2026 playoffs. Electing to field first, SRH stifled the home side through a brilliant bowling display led by Pat Cummins. The Australian speedster dismantled the CSK top order, taking 3 wickets for just 28 runs in his 4 overs. Despite brisk contributions from Sanju Samson (27 off 13) and Dewald Brevis (44 off 27), CSK could only post a modest total of 180/7 in their 20 overs.

The chase proved to be a calculated masterclass by Hyderabad. Number 3 batter Ishan Kishan anchored the innings beautifully, anchoring the chase with a Player of the Match-winning performance of 70 runs off 47 balls, spiced with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Useful contributions from Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26) ensured that despite a couple of late breakthroughs by Mukesh Choudhary (2/36), SRH comfortably chased down the 181-run target. Finishing at 181/5 with a full over to spare, Hyderabad officially punched their ticket to the top four, leaving Chennai to contemplate a major squad overhaul for the next season.
