After twenty-plus years on 60 Minutes, it was time for Anderson Cooper to hang up his hat. On Sunday, May 17th, the journalist and father of two bid an emotional farewell to the infamous broadcast. So, what did he have to say as he was leaving this life behind? Keep reading for more details.
Anderson Cooper Says ‘Goodbye’
Many viewers know Anderson Cooper from CNN and his nightly broadcast. He also travels overseas for the hard-hitting stories and co-hosts New Year’s Eve with Andy Cohen. The two have gone on tour for a live show, which fans love. They have great chemistry, so seeing them up close and personal is quite a treat. At the same time, Anderson is featured on 60 Minutes and has been for around twenty years. Recently, it was announced that he would be leaving his post so that he could stay focused on CNN and spend time with his sons, Sebastian and Wyatt.
It was finally time to leave his home at 60 Minutes, but it was a very emotional goodbye for the popular news anchor. He loves what he does and why he does it, so to leave is extremely hard. As it was time to end, he held back tears as he said his name. Segments from the years Anderson had spent on the show ran, and as they played, he paid tribute to his two decades:
“This is crazy. This is my last shoot for 60 Minutes. 60 Minutes has always been a place, at least for me, that you get to step into somebody else’s shoes. You get to see things through their eyes and see what their struggles are and what they are facing and you learn from that.”
The New York City native also noted that being on the show has been a “hell of a ride.” Anderson Cooper shared that he began watching the news program when he was 10, after his father passed. He felt he could trust what the show said and what they stood for. Getting the job was such an honor that he could not believe he was going to be a part of it.
The Big Hope
As Anderson Cooper was departing 60 Minutes, he made it clear that he had one big hope. He hoped that the news program would remain the same and hold to the integrity that it always stood for:
“Things can always evolve and change and I think that’s awesome and things should evolve and change. But I hope the core of what 60 Minutes is always remains.”
Anderson is a hard core anchor and journalist, so it makes sense that he would want the foundation to remain true. He has not shared if he will come back for occasional segments, but that would be nice to whole the show accountable.
