Neymar has revealed he “cried for several hours” after discovering he had been included in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The Santos forward had not featured for Brazil since suffering an ACL injury in his left knee in October 2023 and had been considered a major doubt for this summer’s tournament.
However, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti included the 34-year-old in his final squad for the competition in North America.
Neymar posted a video on social media showing the moment he learned he had made the squad.
The footage showed the forward embracing physiotherapist Rafael Martini and fitness coach Ricardo Rosa, both of whom played important roles during his recovery process.
Addressing his Santos team-mates and club staff, Neymar spoke openly about the emotional impact of the call-up.
“It’s difficult to explain with words the emotions I’ve felt,” Neymar said.
“I want to thank everyone here. This call-up wasn’t just for me but for everyone involved in the process, everyone who was with me on the pitch, off the pitch, looking after our safety, our fitness and our meals.
“I admit that I cried for several hours because it was by no means easy to arrive at this point.
“Those who have been with me through it all know that it was difficult, it was hard. But after hearing my name on the list, all the sacrifices and all the effort was worth it.”
Neymar Set For Fourth World Cup
Neymar is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals and is preparing to play at his fourth World Cup.
His inclusion was celebrated widely by Brazil supporters, with the veteran forward acknowledging the backing he received throughout his recovery.
“Thank you for your support, for always believing in me,” Neymar added.
“I’m here to thank you for your support throughout my career. We’re in this together as Brazil heads for a sixth World Cup title.”
Brazil Continue World Cup Preparations
Brazil will play Panama at the Maracana on 31 May before travelling to the United States for the tournament.
Ancelotti’s side then face Egypt in Cleveland on 6 June in their final warm-up match.
Brazil begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on 13 June before further Group C matches against Haiti and Scotland.
