Masters of the Universe director, Travis Knight, has shed insight into his plans for expanding the Mattel characters for upcoming projects. The filmmaker, also credited on the Transformers toys film adaptation Bumblebee and the upcoming animated film Wildwood, which is based on the novel of the same name, has discussed She-Ra, a relative of his protagonist Prince Adam/He-Man, possibly joining his live-action take on the ’80s franchise.
Knight’s film is based on the sword and sorcery media of the same name, also referred to as He-Man, signifying the central character, a superstrong hero who battles against evil forces for the safety and freedom of his home, Eternia. He is joined by many other characters throughout his battles, including his cousin She-Ra, also known as Adora, who is revealed in her debut 1985 series She-Ra: Princess of Power as He-Man’s long-lost twin sister.
The director revealed in a recent interview that he “can say very little about She-Ra,” but in his view, “She-Ra has always been a big part of the Masters world and a big part of Adam’s story.”
Does this mean a full-on screen appearance or references to the character?
“In the fullness of time, if we’re lucky to tell more stories in this universe, She-Ra will play a huge part,” Knight added.
“Whether or not she plays any part in this movie, I cannot say – but we definitely had many, many conversations about the character,” the director clarified. “There are giant scenes in the movie that aren’t there any longer. I am very proud of the movie, but there are definitely things that I love that we had to cut.”
Hopefully, they will get to see the light of day at some point,” he concluded.
Knight’s Masters of the Universe is a reboot of the film adaptations of the fantasy media series, including an animated TV show and an original 1987 film, starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, who must reclaim his legacy and birthright. Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba also star.
Masters of the Universe hits cinemas on 3rd June.
