New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr has expressed strong confidence in her side’s ability to defend the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2026, pointing to the team’s improved squad depth, growing self-belief, and consistent performances over the last two years. As the White Ferns gear up for another global campaign, Kerr believes the current group has all the ingredients required to repeat history.

The defending champions are entering the tournament with momentum on their side. Ahead of the World Cup, New Zealand are involved in a three-match T20I series against hosts England women’s cricket team, which is expected to serve as ideal preparation for the marquee event.

Blend of experience and youth strengthens New Zealand

New Zealand’s squad for the upcoming tournament features a healthy mix of seasoned campaigners and exciting young talent. Veterans Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine are set to appear in their 10th Women’s T20 World Cup, bringing invaluable experience to the dressing room.

At the same time, fresh faces like Nensi Patel and Izzy Sharp are preparing for their maiden World Cup appearances. Kerr believes this balance has made the side stronger and more adaptable than before.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the skipper highlighted how different players stepping up at crucial moments has become one of New Zealand’s biggest strengths in recent times.

According to Kerr, the White Ferns have evolved considerably since lifting the trophy two years ago. She explained that the side now possesses greater depth, which allows them to handle pressure situations better and remain competitive even when senior players are unavailable or out of form.

“In the two years since we lifted the trophy, our depth has improved. The most pleasing thing of late is when we have been successful, it has involved different players stepping up at different times,” said Kerr as quoted by ICC.

Kerr stressed that winning the World Cup previously has given the squad confidence and clarity heading into another high-pressure campaign. The all-rounder stated that the team understands what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage and now carries the belief that they can do it again.

The New Zealand captain also spoke about the importance of sticking to the team’s strengths rather than overcomplicating situations during the tournament. She emphasised that executing their plans well and maintaining a strengths-based approach could significantly boost their chances of retaining the title.

“Becoming champions two years ago was an incredible achievement and it has given us belief as we look to do it again. Ultimately, we’ve done it before and we know we are capable of doing it, so the main factor is that belief. If we have a strengths-based approach and nail the things we do really well, we have a good chance of winning the World Cup,” added Kerr.

Notably, New Zealand have been placed in Group 2 of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, alongside England women’s cricket team, Ireland women’s cricket team, Scotland women’s cricket team, Sri Lanka women’s cricket team and West Indies women’s cricket team.

Captaincy brings the best out of Kerr

Kerr herself has been in sensational form leading into the tournament. The star all-rounder recently dominated against South Africa women’s cricket team, scoring 276 runs and extending her remarkable streak of 11 consecutive T20I scores above 30. The 25-year-old admitted that captaincy has been an enjoyable experience since taking over earlier this year. Kerr revealed that she has always loved the tactical side of cricket and is relishing the opportunity to contribute both on and off the field.

She added that helping teammates perform at their best and building a positive team environment has become one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership.

“On a personal note, I’ve really enjoyed captaining since coming into the role earlier this year. I’ve always loved thinking about the game, so I’m enjoying the tactical side of it as well as the off-field elements, such as how to get the best out of the people around you,” Kerr explained.

With a confident squad, experienced leaders, and one of the world’s best all-rounders in outstanding touch, New Zealand will enter the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 determined to prove that their previous triumph was no one-off achievement.
