While the Mumbai batter remains one of the most explosive stroke-makers in world cricket, concerns around his prolonged dip in form have triggered serious conversations within the selection committee about the team’s long-term leadership direction.
According to multiple reports, the BCCI selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are increasingly worried about Suryakumar’s batting numbers since taking over captaincy duties. Amid the uncertainty surrounding Suryakumar’s future, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has openly backed Shreyas Iyer as a leading candidate to become India’s next T20I captain.
Ponting, who currently serves as head coach of Punjab Kings, believes Iyer has evolved tremendously both as a batter and as a leader over the last couple of seasons. Speaking to PTI, the legendary Australian stated that Iyer should firmly be in contention whenever India decide to transition to a new captain.
“I think there are several contenders, but he’s one of the main contenders as far as I’m concerned,” Ponting said while discussing India’s leadership options.
The endorsement comes at a fascinating time for Iyer, whose international T20 career had appeared to stall completely. The right-handed batter has not played a T20I for India since December 2023 and even spent an entire home series against New Zealand on the bench earlier this year. Yet, through consistent reinvention in franchise cricket, Iyer has once again forced his name into the national conversation.
Long criticised for being a conservative middle-order anchor, Iyer transformed his T20 approach dramatically in recent seasons. His strike rate, which once hovered around 135, surged to 178 last season and remains above 160 in IPL 2026 — a major shift that has strengthened his case for a comeback.
