The lines between sports in India are blurring in the best way possible, sparking a fascinating debate over who truly reigns supreme in the fitness arena. It all started when cricket icon Virat Kohli made a candid admission about the elite conditioning of hockey players. Not one to let a compliment slide without a bit of friendly competition, former Indian hockey captain has officially thrown down the gauntlet, challenging the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) squad to a high-stakes fitness showdown.

Former India hockey captain challenges Virat Kohli to join a special training session following fitness remark

Speaking in an exclusive interview with RevSportz, midfield maestro Manpreet Singh reacted enthusiastically to Kohli’s recent comments. Known as one of the most physically imposing and conditioned athletes in world hockey, Manpreet did not hesitate to invite the batting maestro and his RCB teammates out of the cricket nets and onto the turf for a joint-training session. The ultimate battleground? A head-to-head Yo-Yo test competition.

While Manpreet showed immense respect for the unique skill set required in modern cricket, he confidently stated that the national hockey team would hold the upper hand in a pure athletic grind.

“If you look, their game is also difficult. The ball comes so fast. If you ask us to bat, that will be difficult too. The ball comes in at 150 kph speed and that is also difficult. His game’s requirement is different and ours is too. His is about eye contact, batting, position and other things,” Manpreet explained

Despite recognizing the sharp reflexes needed to face triple-digit bowling speeds, the hockey icon believes the sheer, unrelenting aerobic and anaerobic demands of hockey would give his side the edge in an endurance battle.

Kohli’s appreciation for Hockey players’ fitness

The cross-sport challenge stems from Kohli’s remarkably humble tribute to India’s hockey stars at the third edition of the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit. The legendary batter, who single-handedly revolutionized the fitness culture within Indian cricket, stunned listeners by claiming that cricketers lag far behind their hockey counterparts.

“I know people sometimes look at fitness as something extraordinary, but for me, it’s simply what the job demands. If I’m being brutally honest, we are not even 15% of the fitness of an Indian hockey player. If the hockey players watch our training sessions, they’d probably laugh because their sport demands far more, physically,” Kohli remarked honestly.

Kohli’s self-awareness highlights the fundamental difference between the sports, cricket relies on explosive bursts of energy interspersed with brief periods of recovery, whereas hockey demands sixty minutes of near-continuous, high-intensity sprinting, rolling substitutions, and rapid directional shifts.

Intriguingly, legendary mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton once echoed this sentiment. Upton previously noted that if any cricketer had the raw physical and mental endurance to survive a rigorous training camp with the national hockey team, it would be Kohli alone. Whether this tantalizing crossover challenge actually materializes remains to be seen, but the mutual respect between these elite athletes has set a phenomenal benchmark for Indian sports culture.
