New Zealand completed their preparations for the upcoming Test series against England in emphatic fashion, overpowering Ireland by an innings and 79 runs in the historic one-off Test at Stormont. The visitors wrapped up the contest shortly before tea on Day 3 after a disciplined bowling display capped a thoroughly dominant all-round performance. While Ireland showed resilience in their second innings through some determined batting efforts, New Zealand’s superior quality with both bat and ball proved too much to overcome.

Tom Blundell and Rachin Ravindra power New Zealand to massive first-innings total

After winning the toss, Ireland opted to bowl first in conditions that appeared favourable for the seamers. The decision initially paid off when New Zealand captain Tom Latham was dismissed without scoring. However, the visitors quickly regained control through an outstanding partnership led by Rachin Ravindra and Tom Blundell.

Ravindra produced a classy knock of 121, while Blundell anchored the innings brilliantly with a magnificent 186. Dean Foxcroft also played a crucial role, narrowly missing out on a century after scoring 98. Their contributions helped New Zealand pile up a daunting 490/8 declared in 119 overs. For Ireland, Mark Adair was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 66 runs despite receiving limited support from the other end.

Nathan Smith wreaks havoc as Ireland collapse

Facing a huge first-innings total, Ireland struggled against New Zealand’s relentless pace attack. Nathan Smith emerged as the chief destroyer, delivering a sensational spell that dismantled the home side’s batting order. Smith returned remarkable figures of 6/40, repeatedly finding movement and bounce to trouble the Irish batters. Andy McBrine fought a lone battle with an unbeaten 73, while Adair added a valuable 40, but Ireland were bundled out for just 179 in 45 overs. The substantial deficit forced Ireland to follow on, leaving them with a daunting task to avoid defeat.

Stephen Doheny and Lorcan Tucker show resistance in second innings

Beginning Day 3 at 65/2, Ireland displayed far greater determination in their second innings. Missing experienced campaigner Paul Stirling and fielding three debutants, the hosts nevertheless showed encouraging signs with the bat.

Stephen Doheny impressed with a patient and composed 57, registering his maiden Test half-century. Wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker also entertained the home crowd with a fluent 50 from just 70 deliveries. The pair helped Ireland put up a much stronger fight and briefly frustrated New Zealand’s bowlers as they attempted to reduce the deficit.

Blair Tickner’s five-for seals comprehensive victory

Just when Ireland appeared capable of stretching the contest deeper into the day, Blair Tickner delivered the breakthrough New Zealand needed. The fast bowler exploited the extra bounce on offer and ripped through the lower order to claim his maiden Test five-wicket haul.

Tickner finished with impressive figures of 5/76, while Smith once again made an impact by bowling with exceptional discipline and adding 2/53 to his match tally. The pacer ended the match with eight wickets overall. Ireland were eventually dismissed for 232 shortly before tea on Day 3, handing New Zealand a commanding innings-and-79-run victory and valuable momentum heading into their much-anticipated Test series against England.
