Kate Hudson is letting herself have a moment. The actress marked son Ryder Russell Robinson’s college graduation this week with a long, heartfelt tribute on Instagram. It was honest and warm.
Ryder is Hudson’s first-born son with ex-husband Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes. He’s now around 22 years old. His graduation this week prompted Hudson to look all the way back to his first days.
“I remember staring into the eyes of baby Ryder,” Hudson wrote. “I was young but unwavering as a mother. I thought I knew exactly what I was doing.” From there, the questions came fast. What food would he love? Would he be funny or serious? Would he be easy or difficult to raise? Hudson admitted she even asked the universe to please make him cool.
The heart of the tribute was the anxiety. Hudson described maternal worry as a “floating friend” she carries every single day. “It’s a she for me,” she wrote. “She keeps me on my mommy toes.” She laid out the specific, quiet fears of parenting an adult child. Have I called too much? Not enough? Are they being kind? Can they manage on their own?
It’s honest in a way a lot of celebrity tributes aren’t. Hudson didn’t polish it up. She named the uncomfortable parts plainly.
Then came the good news.
At the graduation, Ryder showed up exactly as she’d hoped. “He is fun, vibrant, kind,” Hudson wrote. “His friends are all awesome and unique, none the same. He loves his family, his siblings and gosh darn it, he loves his mom.” She described the night as witnessing “a young man carrying great love out into the world.”
That phrase feels genuine. You can tell she meant every word.
Hudson closed by reaching out to other parents sharing the milestone. “I’m allowing myself a quiet moment of pride,” she wrote, “and I hope many of the mamas and papas out there having the same experience this past week are doing the same. Here’s to the graduates!”
The tribute drew over 195,000 likes on Instagram. For something with no announcement attached, that’s a meaningful response. People found something real in it.
Ryder is the oldest of Hudson’s three children. She also has son Bingham, 14, with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy of Muse. Her daughter Rani Rose, 7, is with Danny Fujikawa. This graduation puts Hudson in a genuinely new chapter. Her eldest is officially out there on his own.
She’s always been candid about her life. This fits that pattern, but it’s gentler than most. There’s no drama here. She watched her son grow up. Now she can breathe a little.
