Actor Tom Holland has shed insight into his work process behind the scenes of the upcoming MCU feature installment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as well as his plans and goals for the character and property. This film will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 38th film, coming after The Fantastic Four: First Steps by Matt Shakman and ahead of the mammoth release of Avengers: Doomsday by the Russo Brothers, Mark and Anthony.
The second part of MCU’s sixth phase, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will see Holland return to the big screen as Peter ‘Spider-Man’ Parker for the eighth time (three standalone performances and four esenble ones) following the tragic events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which saw Parker make the heartbreaking decison of having his love and best friend both forget his identity to save the multiverse. Brand New Day will explore the aftermath of this, with Parker anonymously protecting his home city while fighting against a new threat, all while his spider-like superpowers undergo a strange evolution.
It has been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have penned the script.
Ahead of the film’s release, Holland has shared that he is happy to undergo a handing over of the beloved superhero and oversee the next generation of Spider-Man, telling Empire that “For whoever’s next….[he] would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.”
“Whatever that looks like, I don’t know,” that actor elaborated “But if I could do what [Robert] Downey [Jr.] did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
The fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man series also saw its leading man transition into a more creative and decision-making role, as it was “the first time in [Holland’s ten-year] tenure as Spider-Man that [he] was…welcomed into the writers’ room,” Holland shares.
He then gave insight into his initial pitch for the web-slinger’s next on-screen adventure, one titled ‘Spider Puberty ‘, which would focus on “Parker losing control” of his powers.
“Spider-Puberty was my tagline pitch to the studio, which was immediately shot down. But they liked the kernel of the idea, and it grew into what we have in the movie now,” the star explained.
Holland is also set to appear this year in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, based on Homer’s Greek epic of the same name, alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas on July 31st.
