The T20I leadership of India could be set for a major change ahead of the upcoming white-ball assignments. According to multiple reports, the national selectors are considering moving on from Suryakumar Yadav as captain following a prolonged dip in form after India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. While no official announcement has been made yet, discussions surrounding the captaincy have intensified, with several players emerging as frontrunners for the role.

If India decide to appoint a new leader, the management will likely prioritize a player who can offer consistency, command respect within the dressing room, and contribute significantly with the bat. Among the names being discussed, three players stand out as strong candidates to take over the responsibility.

Leading contenders for India’s T20I captaincy

The next captain will not only be tasked with maintaining India’s dominance in T20 cricket but also building a squad for future ICC tournaments. Here are three players who could replace Suryakumar as India’s next T20I skipper.

    1. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer appears to be the most straightforward option if the selectors opt for an experienced leader. The right-hander has already established himself as one of India’s most dependable white-ball batters and possesses considerable captaincy experience. Iyer enjoyed an outstanding IPL 2026 campaign with Punjab Kings (PBKS), scoring 498 runs in 14 matches at an average of 55.33 and a strike rate of 168.81. His season included a maiden IPL century along with several match-winning performances.

Leadership is another area where Iyer strengthens his case. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title and also led Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings to IPL finals. Since he naturally bats in the middle order, he could also provide a seamless replacement in the role currently occupied by Suryakumar.

    2. Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan has re-established himself as a serious contender for a regular spot in India’s T20I setup and could be a dark-horse captaincy candidate. The wicketkeeper-batter enjoyed a remarkable IPL 2026 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and was among the tournament’s most impactful batters. Kishan amassed 602 runs in 15 matches at an average of 40.13 and an impressive strike rate of 182.42. His aggressive approach at the top of the order consistently put opposition bowling attacks under pressure.

The left-hander also gained valuable leadership experience after serving as Sunrisers Hyderabad interim captain during the first half of the season when regular skipper Pat Cummins was unavailable. His ability to lead a franchise in a high-pressure tournament could work in his favour if selectors look beyond the obvious candidates.

    3. Tilak Varma

At just 23 years of age, Tilak Varma represents the long-term option. Reports have already indicated that the selectors are keen to evaluate his leadership potential, with the youngster recently being handed captaincy responsibilities for India A. Tilak produced another impressive IPL season for Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2026, scoring 356 runs in 14 matches at an average of 32.36 and a strike rate of 148.95. His campaign was highlighted by a sensational unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls against Gujarat Titans (GT), which marked his maiden IPL century.

What makes Tilak particularly appealing is his age profile. The left-hander could potentially lead India for several years if groomed properly. With modern T20 cricket increasingly favouring young leaders who can grow alongside the team, Tilak’s candidature cannot be ignored despite his relatively limited captaincy experience.
