King Charles III brought together young people, youth sector leaders, and Sir Gareth Southgate at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday for a summit focused on youth unemployment and the challenges facing the next generation.

The gathering was organized through The King’s Trust. It gave leaders from across society a direct chance to hear from young people about what genuine support actually looks like. Topics included being out of work, living with isolation, and navigating personal struggles. Chronic insecure employment was high on the list too.

The room included both young people and youth sector representatives, putting those most affected by these issues in direct conversation with those who can shape the response.

Sir Gareth Southgate attended in his role as Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust. He’s one of the charity’s more visible advocates, and showing up at Buckingham Palace puts real weight behind what’s coming next.

Following Wednesday’s meeting, The King’s Trust and Southgate are set to launch a nationwide initiative. The charity described the aim as giving young people “greater access to courses, coaches and resources to build confidence and skills for life.” For someone out of work with few options, that kind of targeted support can make a real difference.

The King’s Trust shared the news on Instagram on Wednesday, posting photos from the morning alongside details of the upcoming program. The post crossed 10,000 likes, a solid response for a charity account. Both King Charles and Southgate carry real public goodwill here, and youth unemployment rarely gets the spotlight it deserves.

The summit falls during Volunteers Week 2026. The King’s Trust is also marking its 50th anniversary this year under the hashtag #KingsTrust50. The charity has spent five decades working with young people facing barriers to employment and education. This initiative looks like one of its more ambitious efforts in some time.

Southgate brings a specific kind of credibility to this work. During his years managing England’s national football team, he became known for speaking openly about mental health and team culture. He built a public reputation around preparing young people for real pressure. Stepping back from the England job, he channeled that same energy into public advocacy. The partnership with The King’s Trust fits naturally with that direction.

The nationwide program hasn’t officially launched yet. Wednesday’s summit was the opening move, clearly designed to build momentum before the rollout. Getting young people into the room at Buckingham Palace, alongside the King and Southgate, signals how seriously this effort is being taken.

Youth unemployment and underemployment don’t usually command this kind of high-profile attention. Holding a summit at one of the most recognized addresses in the world, with a former England manager at the table, is one deliberate way to change that.

Full details on the initiative are on The King’s Trust website. Wednesday’s meeting sets the stage for what both parties say will be a genuine nationwide push.
