India’s transition towards the next generation of red-ball cricketers took another significant step forward as the team handed a maiden Test cap to Rajasthan spinner Manav Suthar in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. With veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja rested for the fixture and the management keen to evaluate emerging talent, the selectors placed their faith in one of the most promising spin-bowling all-rounders in the domestic circuit.

The 23-year-old received his Test cap from senior spinner Kuldeep Yadav ahead of the match in Mullanpur, marking the culmination of years of hard work in domestic cricket. Having impressed consistently in the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and India A assignments, Suthar has steadily climbed the ranks and is now being viewed as a potential long-term option in India’s spin department.

    Who is Manav Suthar?

Manav is a left-arm orthodox spinner and lower-order batter from Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Representing Rajasthan in domestic cricket, he has earned a reputation as one of India’s most promising red-ball spin prospects due to his ability to extract turn, vary his pace cleverly and maintain relentless accuracy over long spells. Apart from his bowling skills, Suthar is also a capable left-handed batter who has contributed valuable runs lower down the order, making him a genuine all-round option in longer formats.

From Sri Ganganagar to the Indian Test team

Born and raised in Sri Ganganagar, Suthar began his cricketing journey in Rajasthan’s age-group setup before progressing through the state ranks. His impressive performances at junior level quickly earned him opportunities in Rajasthan’s senior domestic side.

The spinner’s steady rise through the system reflected his consistency rather than sudden breakthroughs. Coaches and selectors were particularly impressed by his temperament, work ethic and ability to bowl long spells, qualities that are highly valued in Test cricket.

Suthar first grabbed national attention during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season. He finished as Rajasthan’s highest wicket-taker with 39 wickets in just six matches at an average of 20.33, emerging as one of the standout performers of the tournament. Since making his first-class debut, he has built an impressive record, claiming 129 wickets in 29 first-class matches while also scoring 945 runs.

His performances have included several match-winning spells and six five-wicket hauls, underlining his effectiveness in red-ball cricket. One of his most memorable domestic performances came during the 2024 Duleep Trophy, where he produced a sensational spell of 7/49 to help his team secure victory.

    IPL journey with Gujarat Titans

Suthar’s consistent domestic performances also earned him opportunities in the IPL with Gujarat Titans (GT). After being signed ahead of IPL 2024, he remained part of the franchise setup and featured in multiple matches across the last two seasons.
Interestingly, reports suggest he was also called up as a net bowler during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where his bowling impressed senior Indian batters, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Now, after years of hard work in domestic cricket and India A assignments, Suthar has achieved the ultimate dream by representing India in Test cricket. With India searching for long-term spin-bowling options and planning for the future beyond the Ravindra Jadeja era, the young Rajasthan all-rounder has a golden opportunity to cement his place in the national setup.

Maiden India Test cap against Afghanistan

Suthar’s long-awaited breakthrough finally arrived when he was named in India’s playing XI for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. He edged out fellow left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey for a place in the side and became India’s first specialist spin Test debutant since Axar Patel in 2021.

The occasion was made even more special as Kuldeep handed him the prestigious Test cap before the start of play. With India searching for future spin-bowling all-rounders and preparing for a packed home Test calendar, the Afghanistan Test provides Suthar with the perfect platform to showcase his talent on the international stage. For the young spinner from Sri Ganganagar, the journey from Rajasthan’s domestic circuit to wearing the India whites has finally come full circle, and this could be just the beginning of a promising international career.
