India‘s T20I setup witnessed a major shake-up as World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav was not only removed from the captaincy but also left out of the squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The decision, announced by the national selectors led by Ajit Agarkar, marked the end of Suryakumar’s brief yet successful stint at the helm.
While the move surprised many fans given India’s successful title defence under his leadership earlier this year, Agarkar explained that the decision was based on a combination of recent performances and the team’s roadmap for the next T20 World Cup cycle. In a significant leadership change, Shreyas Iyer was appointed as India’s new T20I captain.

Addressing the media in Mumbai, Agarkar acknowledged that leaving out a captain who had recently guided India to a world title was one of the toughest calls the selection committee had to make. However, he stressed that post-World Cup evaluations are a normal part of the team’s planning process.
According to Agarkar, Suryakumar’s recent form played a role in the decision. The selectors also considered the direction in which they wanted the T20 side to move over the next two years, with the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympic Games firmly on the horizon.
“With regards to Surya, obviously, it’s a tough one… having just won the World Cup. But as it happens after most World Cups, we try and reassess what the best way forward is. Partly his own form, but also looking at the next two-year cycle or a little bit more than two years now till the next World Cup, we thought this was the best way forward,” said Agarkar in the presser.
The chairman of selectors explained that every World Cup cycle brings fresh challenges and opportunities, prompting the management to reassess combinations and leadership structures. He admitted that informing Suryakumar about the decision was not easy, especially given his contribution to India’s recent success, but maintained that the move was made with the team’s long-term interests in mind.
Agarkar emphasized that there had been no international cricket since India’s T20 World Cup triumph, making this the ideal moment to begin implementing a new strategy. The selectors felt it was the right time to build a squad capable of sustaining success over the next cycle rather than focusing solely on past achievements.
“Of course, it’s a tough decision. Someone who led you in the World Cup, it’s not the easiest thing to try and change. But like I said, we’ve not had any international cricket after that World Cup. Partly the form, but partly also how we go forward is always at the back of your mind. And moving ahead, with a new captain, in this case Shreyas was in our view the right call. We know he’s been captain and just won a World Cup, so it’s not the easiest conversation when you want to tell the player that. But we’re doing everything in the interest of what the team needs going forward,” added Agarkar.
Selectors back long-term vision for T20 cricket
The decision highlights India’s intention to refresh its T20 setup ahead of a crucial period for the format. With several young players pushing for opportunities, the selectors appear keen to establish a core group that can develop together over the coming years. Suryakumar remains one of India’s most accomplished T20 batters, but the management believes competition for places and future planning must take precedence. The move signals a shift towards a new era rather than a reflection solely on one player’s achievements.
Agarkar backs Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain
While explaining Suryakumar’s omission, Agarkar also strongly endorsed Iyer’s appointment as captain. He described Iyer as a deserving candidate whose leadership credentials have been built through consistent success in franchise cricket. Iyer’s captaincy résumé includes guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and leading Punjab Kings to the final the following season. Beyond his leadership skills, his batting form has also impressed the selectors. Agarkar revealed that Iyer was close to making India’s T20 World Cup squad earlier this year but missed out due to the balance of the team.
The selection chief believes Iyer now possesses the experience and maturity required to handle international captaincy. With strong recent performances and a proven record of leading teams under pressure, the Mumbai batter emerged as the standout choice to guide India’s T20 side into its next chapter.
“Like I said, Shreyas is a well-deserving candidate. We’ve seen what he’s done over the last few years, leading different franchises. He won once, had a tougher season this year after a great start. He’s seen everything that a captain possibly can. His own performances have been really good. He was quite close to getting into that T20 World Cup squad as well, but [with] Surya still there, there was no room for him. He, in my opinion, was a stand-out candidate with enough experience now. This will obviously be a different challenge,” Agarkar added further.
